routine following

One Everyday Therapy Activity for Routine Following

Use a simple two-step First–Then picture board to help a 3–7 year old see what comes now and next. It lowers the surprise of transitions, builds routine following, and works best done daily at the same moments with warm praise for the effort of following along.

One Everyday Activity for Routine Following — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

A predictable day is the quiet gift you give a child who finds the world unpredictable — and one simple picture can be the start.

In short

Try a First–Then picture board: show one small step now and the rewarding next step right after. For a child aged 3–7, this turns invisible time into something they can see, which makes following a routine feel safe rather than surprising. Use it daily, at the same moments, and keep it cheerful.

The everyday activity

Take two pictures or simple drawings — for example First: brush teeth, Then: story time. Place them side by side where your child can see them.
  • Say it warmly and simply: "First teeth, then story."
  • Point to First, do the step together, then move the First card away and celebrate moving to Then.
  • Keep it to two steps at the start; add a third only once the pattern is familiar.
  • Use the same board for the same routines each day — mornings, mealtimes, bedtime.
  • Praise the act of following, not perfection: "You looked at the board — well done!"

Do this for five minutes, once or twice a day. Consistency matters far more than length.

The science

Young children build routine-following through predictability and visual support. A First–Then board reduces the working-memory load of remembering what comes next, and the visible "Then" step offers natural motivation. This is a core idea in behaviour therapy — pairing a clear cue with a positive outcome — and it strengthens routine following as a building block of social participation. Visual schedules are widely recommended for supporting transitions in early childhood.

What to watch

Notice whether your child glances at the board, follows the first step more easily over weeks, or shows less distress at transitions. If routines stay very rigid, or any change causes intense distress across home and school, mention it at a developmental check.

Try this at home

Keep it to two pictures at first — First and Then — and praise the moment your child looks at the board, not just finishing the task.

Frequently asked

At what age can I start a First–Then board?

Most children aged around 3 onwards respond well to simple two-picture boards. Younger toddlers may need an even simpler version with real objects rather than pictures. Keep language short and the steps few.

What if my child ignores the board?

Start with a 'Then' step your child genuinely enjoys, and point and narrate it yourself for the first few weeks. Children often watch before they engage. Consistency at the same daily moments helps it become familiar.

Is this a treatment for any condition?

No. It is everyday home support to build routine-following skills. It is not a diagnosis or therapy plan. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.
