An Everyday Therapy Activity for Repetitive Behaviours

Offer a rhythmic "calm box" — dough, pouring, or stacking play — when repetitive behaviours rise. It meets the same soothing, predictable need in a richer, more connecting way, gently widening tolerance for variety and building self-regulation.

When your child's hands flap or they spin the same toy again and again, it isn't naughtiness — it's their nervous system reaching for calm. You can meet that need with something even better.

In short

One lovely everyday activity is a "calm box" with rhythmic, hands-on play — think squishing dough, stacking and toppling blocks, or pouring rice between cups. These give the same soothing, predictable rhythm your child seeks through repetitive behaviours, but in a richer, more flexible way. Offer it warmly when you notice the behaviour rising, and join in alongside them.

How to do it at home

1. Make a calm box. Fill a small tub with 2–3 rhythmic options: playdough, a chunky bead string, a pouring set, or a textured fidget. 2. Watch for the cue. When you see flapping, spinning or repeated lining-up, gently say, "Let's do our calm box," and bring it close — no scolding, no rush. 3. Mirror first, then stretch. Copy what your child does (squish, squish), then add one tiny new step ("squish… and roll!"). This honours their rhythm while gently widening it. 4. Keep it short and joyful. Five to ten minutes is plenty. End while it's still fun.

The science, simply

Repetitive behaviours often help a child regulate their emotions and sensory world. Rather than stopping them — which can raise distress — we offer a functionally similar, more engaging substitute. Over time, rhythmic shared play builds tolerance for variety and strengthens self-regulation, which sits at the heart of behaviour therapy. Doing this alongside your child also turns a solitary loop into a moment of connection.

What to watch

Watch whether the calm box genuinely soothes or causes distress; if repetitive behaviours sharply increase, cause self-injury, or block all other play, mention this at a developmental check rather than continuing alone.

Try this at home

Keep a small calm box ready. When you spot flapping or spinning, mirror your child's rhythm first, then add one tiny new step — five joyful minutes is enough.

Frequently asked

Should I stop my child's repetitive behaviours?

Usually no — they often help your child feel calm and regulated. Instead of stopping them, offer a soothing, rhythmic alternative like a calm box, and join in. Only behaviours that cause harm or completely block other play need closer professional attention.

How often should I do the calm box activity?

Offer it whenever you notice repetitive behaviours building, and weave it into the daily routine. Short five-to-ten-minute sessions, ended while it's still enjoyable, work far better than long ones.

Does this replace therapy?

No. It's a supportive home activity. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care, and a tailored therapy plan comes from your clinician.
