Inhibition

What is Inhibition in child development?

Inhibition is a child's growing ability to stop or hold back an automatic action, wait, and resist distraction — a core building block of attention and self-control within executive function. In toddlers aged 12–36 months it is only just emerging, so grabbing, blurting and difficulty waiting are completely normal. It strengthens through play, routines and warm guidance, and is not a diagnosis but a skill that develops over time.

That tiny pause before a toddler reaches for the forbidden biscuit — that flicker of self-control is inhibition at work.

In short

Inhibition is a child's growing ability to stop or hold back an automatic action, urge or response — to wait, to think before doing, and to resist a tempting distraction. It is one of the core building blocks of attention and self-control, part of what we call executive function. In toddlers it is only just beginning to emerge, so plenty of grabbing, blurting and difficulty waiting is completely normal at this age.

What inhibition looks like in toddlers

In everyday life, inhibition shows up in small but important ways: pausing when you say "stop", waiting a moment for a turn, not touching something they've been told is hot, or stopping a game when asked. Between 12 and 36 months these skills are very much under construction — a toddler's brain is still wiring the pathways that make waiting and stopping possible. So a child who snatches a toy or struggles to wait is usually showing typical, developing self-control, not a problem. Inhibition grows steadily through play, gentle routines and warm, consistent guidance, blossoming most through the preschool years.

When to seek a review

Consider a friendly developmental check if, alongside very little ability to pause or wait, your toddler shows limited language, little response to their name, or differences in play and connection compared with peers — especially if a teacher or doctor shares similar observations. The goal is to understand the whole child, never to label.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. Our team looks at the whole picture of how a child builds inhibition and other thinking skills, then shapes an individualised plan that may draw on special education and play-based support.

What to watch

Very little ability to pause or wait alongside limited language, little response to name, or differences in play and connection compared with peers — especially if a teacher or doctor notices the same.

Try this at home

Build inhibition through play — games like 'red light, green light', 'Simon says', and gentle turn-taking help your toddler practise stopping and waiting without pressure.

Frequently asked

At what age should a toddler be able to wait or stop?

Inhibition is only just emerging between 12 and 36 months, so toddlers naturally find it hard to wait or stop. These skills strengthen most through the preschool years with play and gentle routines.

Is poor self-control in a toddler a sign of ADHD?

Not on its own. Difficulty waiting and stopping is typical for toddlers, and ADHD is not meaningfully assessed at this age. If you have wider concerns about attention, language or play, a friendly developmental review can help.

How can I help my toddler build inhibition?

Playful games like 'Simon says', turn-taking, and warm, consistent routines all give toddlers safe practice at stopping and waiting. Praise the small pauses you notice.
