Walk through the door wondering what really happens in there — and you'll find purposeful, joyful play that's quietly building your child's voice.

In short

Speech and language therapy sessions are structured, play-based and led by a qualified speech-language pathologist who turns communication goals into games your child enjoys. A typical session blends warm-up and connection, targeted activities for the specific skill being worked on — sounds, words, understanding, gestures or social back-and-forth — and a few minutes of coaching so you can carry it home. Sessions are tailored to your child's age, interests and goals, and progress is gentle, repeated and celebrated step by step.

What a session usually looks like

  • Settling in — the therapist greets your child and follows their lead with a favourite toy or activity, building trust so communication feels safe and fun.
  • Targeted play — purposeful games chosen for a specific goal: making particular sounds, naming objects, following instructions, taking turns, using gestures or building sentences. The play is the therapy.
  • Modelling and prompting — the therapist models the sound, word or gesture, then gives your child just enough support to try it, gradually fading help as confidence grows.
  • Lots of repetition, lightly disguised — the same skill practised many ways across the session, because the brain learns communication through joyful, frequent repetition.
  • Parent coaching — a few minutes showing you simple strategies — narrating daily routines, offering choices, pausing to let your child respond — so practice continues between visits.
  • Notes and next steps — small goals reviewed, wins noted, and the plan nudged forward.

For children who use few or no spoken words, sessions may include gestures, picture cards or communication devices (AAC) — these support talking, they never replace the chance to speak.

What shapes your child's plan

No two plans look alike. Sessions are built around whether the focus is understanding language, speaking clearly, finding words, or using communication socially — and around what your child loves, so motivation stays high. You are the most powerful part of the team: the everyday talking, reading and play you do at home is where the biggest gains take root.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child enjoys and engages in the play, tries the sounds or words being practised, and starts using new communication at home — these everyday signs show the goals are taking root.

Try this at home

Narrate your day out loud and pause often — describe what you're doing, then wait a few seconds to give your child the space and reason to respond in their own way.

Frequently asked

How long does a speech therapy session last?

Most sessions run around 30 to 45 minutes, kept short and playful so your child stays engaged. The exact length is tailored to your child's age, attention span and goals by the speech-language pathologist.

Do I stay in the room during my child's session?

Often yes, especially for younger children — your presence builds comfort, and the therapist coaches you so you can continue strategies at home. The approach is decided together, based on what helps your child engage best.

Is the play just fun, or is it actually therapy?

The play is the therapy. Every game is chosen to practise a specific communication goal through joyful repetition, because young children learn language best when they are motivated and enjoying themselves.

What if my child barely speaks yet?

Sessions can include gestures, picture cards or communication devices (AAC) to give your child a way to connect now. These supports build communication confidence and encourage spoken words rather than replacing them.
