Floortime (DIR) therapy

What happens during Floortime (DIR) therapy sessions?

Floortime (DIR) sessions involve an adult getting down to the child's level and following their lead in play, opening back-and-forth "circles of communication" to build attention, emotional connection, two-way exchange and thinking — with parents coached to use these moments at home. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

What Happens in a Floortime (DIR) Session — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child plays on the floor and an adult joins in with delight, something powerful happens — connection becomes the classroom.

In short

In a Floortime (DIR) session, the therapist or parent gets down to your child's level — quite literally on the floor — and follows your child's lead, joining whatever they are naturally drawn to. Through playful, back-and-forth interaction the adult gently opens "circles of communication" that stretch your child's attention, emotional connection, two-way exchange and thinking. There are no flashcards or drills; the play itself is the therapy, building the social-emotional foundations beneath language and learning.

What actually happens in a session

  • Following the child's lead — the adult watches what captivates your child (lining up cars, spinning a lid, a favourite toy) and joins that activity with warmth rather than redirecting it.
  • Opening and closing "circles of communication" — every gesture, glance, sound or word your child offers is met with a response that invites another, so the to-and-fro of interaction grows longer and richer.
  • Playful challenges — the adult adds gentle, fun obstacles (a hand over the toy, a pretend surprise) to encourage your child to communicate, solve and engage a little more.
  • Building up the developmental ladder — sessions work through shared attention, engagement, two-way communication, complex problem-solving and, in time, ideas and pretend play.
  • Parent at the centre — DIR coaches you to use these moments at home, because warm everyday interaction is where most of the progress is made.
  • Tuned to your child's profile — the play is shaped around how your child takes in and responds to the world (sounds, touch, movement), so it always feels enjoyable, not overwhelming.

The aim is never to make a child perform on cue, but to deepen genuine connection — and from that connection, communication and thinking flourish.

When to seek a check

If you notice your child finds it hard to share attention, respond to their name, engage in back-and-forth play, or use gestures and words to connect, a developmental check helps clarify how best to support them. Early, relationship-based support tends to help most, and a clinician can tell you whether Floortime, speech therapy, occupational therapy or a blend fits your child best.

Frequently asked

Is Floortime just playing on the floor?

It looks like play, and that is the point — but it is purposeful. The therapist follows your child's lead and gently builds back-and-forth interaction to grow attention, emotional connection and communication, one playful exchange at a time.

How long is a Floortime session?

Sessions are typically structured around short, focused stretches of engaged play, with the therapist coaching you to repeat these warm interactions through the day at home, where much of the progress happens.

Can I do Floortime at home?

Yes — parents are central to DIR. Your clinician will coach you to follow your child's lead, respond to every gesture or sound, and add gentle playful challenges so connection and communication keep growing between sessions.
