play therapy

What goals does play therapy work on?

Play therapy works on emotional regulation, social and relationship skills, communication, confidence, problem-solving and processing difficult experiences — using play, a child's natural language, to build coping skills and self-belief. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

What goals does play therapy work on? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child plays freely, they are often telling us exactly what they need to learn, feel and grow into.

In short

Play therapy works on the goals a child cannot always put into words — emotional regulation, confidence, social skills, communication, problem-solving and processing big feelings or change. Through play, which is a child's natural language, a trained therapist helps your child express themselves, build coping skills and develop the relationships and self-belief that carry into everyday life. Goals are always shaped around your child's strengths and stage.

The goals play therapy works on

  • Emotional regulation — recognising, naming and managing big feelings like anger, fear or frustration, so meltdowns slowly give way to calmer ways of coping.
  • Social and relationship skills — turn-taking, sharing, reading others' feelings, making and keeping friends, and trusting safe adults.
  • Communication and self-expression — using play, story and symbol to express thoughts and worries a child cannot yet say out loud.
  • Confidence and self-esteem — experiencing success, choice and mastery so a child feels capable and valued.
  • Problem-solving and flexibility — trying ideas, coping with "not working", and adapting — skills that underpin learning and independence.
  • Processing difficult experiences — change, loss, anxiety, or family transitions, worked through safely at the child's own pace.
  • Behaviour and attention — channelling impulses, following gentle structure, and building focus through engaging, purposeful play.

The therapist follows the child's lead, then gently guides — never rushing, always building on what the child already does well.

When a play-therapy check helps

If your child seems frequently overwhelmed, withdrawn, struggles with friendships, has big behaviours that puzzle you, or is coping with a stressful change, a developmental check can clarify whether play therapy — alone or alongside other support — would help most.

What to watch

Watch for a child who is often overwhelmed or withdrawn, struggles to make or keep friends, has big behaviours that are hard to understand, or is coping with a stressful change.

Try this at home

Make time for unstructured, child-led play each day — follow your child's lead, narrate feelings you notice ("that looks frustrating"), and resist fixing every problem so they can practise coping.

Frequently asked

Is play therapy just playing?

No — it looks like play, but a trained therapist purposefully follows and gently guides the child to build emotional, social and communication goals. Play is simply the natural language through which young children express and learn.

What age is play therapy suitable for?

Play therapy is commonly used with younger children for whom talking through feelings is hard, but the approach can be adapted across a wide range of ages and needs. A clinician will advise what suits your child best.

Will play therapy alone be enough?

For some children yes; for others it works best alongside speech, occupational or behavioural support. A clinician-led assessment helps decide the right blend of goals and therapies for your child.
