repeats words or phrases over and over

What it means when your child repeats words or phrases

Repeating words or phrases — echolalia — is often a normal part of how children learn to talk, used to practise language, self-soothe or communicate. It mainly warrants a closer look if it remains the dominant communication style past about age 3 or appears with differences in social connection or play. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

What it means when your child repeats words or phrases
Why does my child repeat words and phrases? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When your little one echoes the same word or phrase again and again, it can feel puzzling — but very often it is one of the ways children practise and make sense of language.

In short

Repeating words or phrases — sometimes called echolalia — is a common and often completely typical part of how children learn to talk. Many toddlers repeat what they hear as a way of practising sounds, holding onto language, or staying connected in a conversation. It only needs a closer look when it is the main way your child communicates beyond the toddler years, or when it comes alongside other differences in language, play or social connection.

What it can mean

  • Typical language practice — between roughly 18 months and 3 years, repeating words and phrases ("immediate echolalia") is a normal rehearsal stage as children build vocabulary and rhythm.
  • Gestalt language learning — some children learn in whole "chunks" (a film line, a phrase you often say) before they break language into single words. This is a recognised pathway to flexible speech.
  • Self-regulation or comfort — a familiar phrase can be soothing, or a way to fill a pause when finding their own words feels hard.
  • Functional communication — a child may use a remembered phrase to mean something — "Do you want juice?" might be their way of asking for juice.
  • A pattern worth exploring — when repetition is the dominant communication style past about age 3, or appears with reduced eye contact, limited pretend play, or difficulty with back-and-forth conversation, a gentle developmental check helps you understand the full picture.

When to seek a check

Consider a friendly developmental and communication check if your child is over 3 and mostly repeats rather than generates their own phrases, if their spontaneous language seems to be slowing or reducing, or if repetition appears together with differences in social connection, play or responding to their name. These are not alarms — they are simply signposts that a closer, supportive look could help.

What to watch

Watch if your child is over 3 and mostly repeats rather than creating their own phrases, if spontaneous language seems to be reducing, or if repetition appears alongside reduced eye contact, limited pretend play, difficulty with back-and-forth conversation, or not responding to their name.

Try this at home

When your child repeats a phrase, gently model the next step rather than correcting — if they echo 'Do you want juice?', respond warmly with 'You want juice! Here's your juice,' showing them the words that match their meaning.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my toddler to repeat words and phrases?

Yes — between roughly 18 months and 3 years, repeating words and phrases is a very common and typical part of learning to talk. Children use repetition to practise sounds, hold onto new language and stay part of a conversation.

What is echolalia?

Echolalia is the repetition of words or phrases a child has heard. It can be immediate (repeating straight away) or delayed (repeating something heard earlier). It is often a normal stage of language learning, and many children use it to communicate meaningfully.

When should I be concerned about repeating?

Consider a gentle developmental check if your child is over 3 and mostly repeats rather than generating their own phrases, if their spontaneous speech seems to be reducing, or if repetition appears with differences in social connection, play or responding to their name.

Can speech therapy help with repetitive language?

Yes. Warm, play-based speech therapy helps children move from repeating phrases towards flexible, spontaneous language — building on the words they already know and understand.
