What if my child isn't showing pronunciation skills yet?

Between 3 and 7 years, children are still mastering speech sounds, and being unclear at times is normal — later sounds like r, s, th and l take longer. A 3-year-old is understood by familiar adults most of the time, and by about 4 most people can follow them. Seek a speech check if your child is much harder to understand than peers, is very frustrated, drops sounds they once used, or has other language or hearing concerns.   • Losing skills — words or sounds once used clearly that have faded.

The aim isn't worry — it's turning small questions into early support, which works beautifully at this age.

If your child is much less clear than peers, is frustrated by it, or speech delay travels with language or hearing concerns, arrange a speech and developmental check now rather than waiting.
