Interests

What a delay in your toddler's interests means

Between 12 and 36 months, interests are how toddlers show delight and draw you in to share it. A delay means few favourites, little curiosity, or rarely bringing things to share. This is not a diagnosis — it is a reason for a gentle early developmental check, because shared interests fuel language and connection, and early support works best now.

Noticing that your toddler hasn't yet found things they love to do or share is a thoughtful, caring observation — and a good reason for a gentle look, not alarm.

In short

Between 12 and 36 months, a child's interests are how they show what delights them — favourite toys, songs, books, or simply pointing at a passing dog to say "look at this with me!". A delay in interests means your toddler may show few favourites, little curiosity to explore, or rarely brings things to share with you. On its own this is not a diagnosis — it is a signal that an early, calm developmental check is wise, because shared interests are the seedbed of language and social connection, and early support works beautifully at this age.

What to watch at 12–36 months

Most toddlers gradually build favourites and love drawing you into them. Gentle flags worth a clinician's eye include:
  • Very narrow or absent play — little interest in toys, books or exploring new things, or playing the same way over and over without curiosity.
  • Not sharing interest — rarely pointing to show you something, bringing toys to you, or looking back to check you're enjoying it too.
  • Little response to what excites them — not lighting up at a favourite song, food or game.
  • Travelling with other differences — few words, not responding to their name, limited eye contact, or not copying simple actions.

Sharing interests ("look at the bird!") is different from simply wanting something — it is the social spark that fuels learning. Noticing this early turns small questions into early opportunities.

What to watch

Seek a check if your toddler shows very narrow or absent play, little curiosity to explore, rarely points to show or brings toys to share, doesn't light up at a favourite song or game, or if this travels with few words, no response to name, limited eye contact, or not copying simple actions.

Try this at home

Follow your child's lead for five minutes a day — sit alongside whatever catches their eye, name it warmly, and wait for them to look back at you. This builds the 'share-it-with-me' spark that grows into language and connection.

Frequently asked

Is a delay in interests the same as autism?

No. A delay in interests is one observation, not a diagnosis. Many toddlers develop favourites at their own pace. It simply means a calm developmental check is wise, so a clinician can see the whole picture of your child's play, language and connection.

What age should my toddler show clear favourites?

Most toddlers between 12 and 36 months gradually build favourite toys, songs and games and love sharing them with you. If you see little curiosity or sharing by around 18–24 months, a gentle check is a good idea.

Can interests be encouraged at home?

Yes. Follow your child's lead, name what they look at, offer a few playful choices, and respond warmly when they show you something. Sharing small moments daily helps interests and connection grow.
