ADHD

What causes ADHD in children?

ADHD is not caused by parenting, screens or sugar. It is highly heritable and reflects natural differences in how the brain's attention and self-regulation systems develop. Some pregnancy and birth factors add to likelihood. A diagnosis is formed only at a Pinnacle centre under clinician care.

What Really Causes ADHD in Children? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child can't sit still or stay focused, the first question every parent asks is simple: why? Here's what the science actually says.

In short

ADHD is not caused by parenting, screen time, or too much sugar. The strongest evidence points to biology — it runs in families and is highly heritable, reflecting natural differences in how the brain's attention and self-regulation systems develop. Some pregnancy and birth factors (such as prematurity, low birth weight, or certain exposures during pregnancy) can add to the likelihood, but ADHD is best understood as a difference in brain development, not something a parent did or failed to do.

What the science actually says

Genes lead the way. ADHD is one of the most heritable of all childhood neurodevelopmental conditions — it commonly appears across siblings and parents. No single gene causes it; rather, many small genetic influences combine to shape how a child regulates attention, activity and impulse.

Brain development plays a part. Research links ADHD to differences in the brain networks that manage focus, working memory and self-control. These are real, biological differences — which is exactly why a child genuinely cannot simply "try harder" to concentrate.

Some environmental factors add to likelihood — being born prematurely or at very low birth weight, and certain exposures during pregnancy. These raise probability; they do not single-handedly cause ADHD.

What does NOT cause ADHD: sugar, screens, vaccines, or a parent being too strict or too soft. Letting go of that guilt is the first healthy step.

When to seek a developmental check

If inattention, restlessness or impulsivity is showing up across more than one setting — home and school or playgroup — and is affecting your child's learning, friendships or daily life, that is a good reason for a structured developmental check. ADHD is usually recognised once a child is in a structured learning environment, often from around age 5–6.

What to watch

Watch whether inattention, restlessness or impulsivity shows up across more than one setting — home and school or playgroup — and whether it affects learning, friendships or daily routines. Patterns that persist across settings matter more than a busy afternoon at home.

Try this at home

Let go of the guilt — ADHD is not caused by anything you did. Instead, build short, predictable routines with clear one-step instructions, and notice and praise the moments your child does focus, however small.

Frequently asked

Is ADHD caused by bad parenting?

No. ADHD is a difference in brain development and is highly heritable. Parenting style does not cause it — though warm, structured routines do help a child with ADHD thrive.

Does too much screen time or sugar cause ADHD?

No. Neither screens nor sugar cause ADHD. They may affect sleep or behaviour in the short term, but the condition itself is rooted in genetics and brain development.

At what age can ADHD be recognised?

ADHD is usually recognised once a child is in a structured learning environment, often from around age 5–6, when attention and self-regulation demands increase. A structured developmental check can guide you.

Can ADHD run in families?

Yes. ADHD is one of the most heritable childhood neurodevelopmental conditions, so it often appears across siblings and parents. No single gene causes it — many small genetic influences combine.
