• Very limited words — fewer than around 50 words, or not joining two words together yet.

• Hard to understand — even familiar people struggle to follow most of what your child says.
• Not following instructions — difficulty with simple one- or two-step requests.
• Little back-and-forth — not asking questions, not responding to their name, limited eye contact, shared smiling or pretend play.
• Losing skills — words or sounds your child once used have faded away (this always deserves prompt review).

The aim is not alarm — it's that a calm, early observation turns small questions into early opportunities.

When to act

If your child has very few words, is not joining words into short sentences, is hard for familiar people to understand, or seems uninterested in connecting, arrange a developmental check now rather than waiting.
