Between eighteen and twenty-four months, your toddler is a busy little explorer — and the best learning happens in the everyday play you already share.

The activities that help an 18-to-24-month-old most are simple, playful and repeated daily — talking and naming throughout the day, reading picture books together, pretend play, big-muscle movement, and giving your child small choices. At this age, learning happens through your warm back-and-forth interaction far more than through any toy, screen or app. You are your toddler's richest learning environment, and ordinary moments are exactly where development blooms.

Activities that support development

  • Talk, narrate and name — describe what you are both doing ("we're washing the red cup"), pause and wait for your toddler to respond, and expand their words ("ball" → "yes, a big bouncy ball!"). This fuels the rapid vocabulary growth typical at this age.
  • Read together every day — point to pictures, name them, and let your toddler turn the pages. Repeating favourite books builds language and listening.
  • Pretend play — feeding a doll, talking on a toy phone, stacking blocks into a "tower". Early make-believe builds thinking, language and social skills.
  • Move the body — walking, climbing safely, kicking and rolling a ball, dancing to music, and stacking or nesting cups build balance, coordination and strength.
  • Offer simple choices and small tasks — "banana or apple?", helping to put toys in a basket, or wiping a table. This builds independence, understanding and confidence.
  • Sing songs with actions — rhymes with hand movements link words, rhythm and movement, and toddlers love the repetition.
  • Sensory play — water, sand, dough or safe household objects let your child explore textures and cause-and-effect at their own pace.

Keep activities short, follow your child's lead, and keep screens to a minimum — real faces and real voices teach best.

How much screen time is okay for an 18-to-24-month-old?

Major guidance recommends keeping screens to a minimum at this age, other than short video calls with family. Real faces, real voices and hands-on play teach far more than any screen, because toddlers learn language through back-and-forth interaction with you.

How many words should my toddler have by 24 months?

Many children have around 50 or more words and begin joining two words together ("more milk") by about 24 months, but there is wide normal variation. If your child has very few words, no pointing, or does not follow simple instructions, a gentle developmental check is worthwhile.
