The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales (SBIS) is a clinician-administered assessment of how your child thinks, reasons and problem-solves across several areas of cognition. It can be a helpful piece of the picture when there are questions about learning, developmental delay, giftedness, or school placement — but it is not something every child needs. Whether it is right for your child is a decision best made with a qualified clinician who first understands your concerns, never a box to tick by default.

When an SBIS assessment may help

The SBIS is usually considered when a specific question needs answering, such as:

• Unexplained learning or developmental concerns — when a child's progress at home or school doesn't fit expectations and the team wants to understand their reasoning and problem-solving profile.
• School or support planning — to inform the right level of teaching, accommodations, or enrichment.
• Part of a wider evaluation — alongside speech, language, attention or developmental assessments, never in isolation.

What it actually involves

The SBIS is a structured, one-to-one session led by a trained professional. Your child works through playful, game-like tasks — looking at pictures, solving puzzles, repeating sequences, answering questions and working with blocks or patterns. It typically spans both verbal and non-verbal reasoning, working memory and quantitative thinking, scaled to your child's age.

Most children find it engaging rather than stressful; the clinician adjusts pace and offers breaks. There is no pass or fail and no preparation needed — in fact, the most honest result comes when a child arrives rested, fed and simply being themselves.
