Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales

Should my child have an SBIS assessment?

The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales (SBIS) is a clinician-administered assessment of a child's reasoning and problem-solving. It can help when there are questions about learning, delay, giftedness or school planning, but isn't needed by every child. Whether it suits your child is best decided with a qualified clinician who understands your concerns — it is one tool, never a label.

Wondering whether a cognitive assessment is the right next step for your child — and what your little one would actually experience? Let's make it clear and unintimidating.

In short

The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales (SBIS) is a clinician-administered assessment of how your child thinks, reasons and problem-solves across several areas of cognition. It can be a helpful piece of the picture when there are questions about learning, developmental delay, giftedness, or school placement — but it is not something every child needs. Whether it is right for your child is a decision best made with a qualified clinician who first understands your concerns, never a box to tick by default.

When an SBIS assessment may help

The SBIS is usually considered when a specific question needs answering, such as:
  • Unexplained learning or developmental concerns — when a child's progress at home or school doesn't fit expectations and the team wants to understand their reasoning and problem-solving profile.
  • School or support planning — to inform the right level of teaching, accommodations, or enrichment.
  • Part of a wider evaluation — alongside speech, language, attention or developmental assessments, never in isolation.

It is not a label and not a verdict on your child's worth or future. A single number never captures a whole child — it is one tool that, in skilled hands, helps a clinician understand how your child learns best.

What it actually involves

The SBIS is a structured, one-to-one session led by a trained professional. Your child works through playful, game-like tasks — looking at pictures, solving puzzles, repeating sequences, answering questions and working with blocks or patterns. It typically spans both verbal and non-verbal reasoning, working memory and quantitative thinking, scaled to your child's age.

Most children find it engaging rather than stressful; the clinician adjusts pace and offers breaks. There is no pass or fail and no preparation needed — in fact, the most honest result comes when a child arrives rested, fed and simply being themselves.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under the care of a qualified clinician — never from an online tool or a single test score. Our clinicians first listen to your concerns, then choose whether a cognitive measure like the SBIS, our own clinician-administered AbilityScore, or another pathway fits your child — and weave the findings into practical support such as early-intervention and developmental therapy. Backed by 2.5 billion+ data points and 25 million+ therapy sessions across 70+ centres, we make sure every assessment leads to a usable plan, not just a report.

What to watch

Watch how your child engages with the session and the clinician's observations — not just a number. Note whether the findings translate into clear, practical recommendations for home and school. If a result feels at odds with the child you know day-to-day, ask the clinician to explain the profile and consider a fuller developmental review.

Try this at home

Before any assessment, the best preparation is none at all — a rested, well-fed child who is simply themselves gives the truest picture. Keep your language relaxed: call it 'puzzles and games with a friendly grown-up', not a 'test'.

Frequently asked

Is the SBIS a pass-or-fail test?

No. There is no pass or fail. It is a structured, game-like session that helps a clinician understand how your child reasons and problem-solves, so support can be matched to how your child learns best.

Does my child need to prepare or revise?

Not at all — there is nothing to study. The most accurate picture comes when your child arrives rested, fed and simply being themselves. Keeping it relaxed is the best preparation.

Does every child need an SBIS?

No. It is considered only when a specific question needs answering — such as unexplained learning concerns, school planning, or as part of a wider evaluation. A Pinnacle clinician decides with you whether it fits your child.

Is the SBIS score a diagnosis?

No. A single score is never a diagnosis or a label. Any diagnosis is formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre by a qualified clinician, who interprets the results within the whole picture of your child.
