Cannot Sit Still

Should I worry about a 5-year-old who can't sit still?

High energy, fidgeting and difficulty sitting still are very common and usually typical at five — stillness is a skill that grows slowly. Seek a developmental check if the restlessness is much greater than peers, happens everywhere (home, kindergarten, new places), gets in the way of learning or friendships, or comes with trouble waiting and listening. This is a reason to look calmly, not a diagnosis — early support works beautifully at this age.

5-Year-Old Can't Sit Still — Should You Worry? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

A five-year-old who's always on the move is, very often, simply a five-year-old — bursting with energy that hasn't yet found its quiet gear.

In short

Lots of wriggling, fidgeting and difficulty sitting through a meal or story is completely normal at five — young children are built to move, and stillness is a skill that grows slowly. It's worth a gentle developmental check if the restlessness is much greater than other children the same age, happens everywhere (home, kindergarten, the park), gets in the way of learning or friendships, or comes with trouble waiting, listening or following simple instructions. This is a reason to look calmly — never a diagnosis — because support at this age works beautifully.

What's typical at five

Most five-year-olds can sit for short, interesting activities — a favourite story, a snack, a game — but only for a few minutes, and they'll squirm when bored or tired. That's healthy. Gentle flags that deserve a clinician's eye include:
  • More than peers, everywhere — restlessness that's clearly bigger than other five-year-olds, and shows up at home, at kindergarten and in new places, not just one tricky setting.
  • Getting in the way — when the constant motion stops your child finishing simple tasks, joining group play, or settling for things they enjoy.
  • Difficulty waiting or listening — trouble taking turns, frequently interrupting, or not seeming to hear instructions even when they can hear well.
  • Travelling with other differences — delays in talking, big swings in mood or frustration, or trouble with sleep.

Remember that movement helps many children think and regulate. Hunger, tiredness, too much screen time, or simply not enough running-around earlier in the day can all make a child fidgety. The aim is not alarm — it's turning a small observation into an early opportunity.

When to act

If the restlessness is much greater than peers, shows up across settings, and gets in the way of learning or friendships, arrange a developmental check now rather than waiting. What you notice every day at home is valuable information for a clinician.

What to watch

Seek a check if restlessness is much greater than other five-year-olds, shows up everywhere (home, kindergarten, new places), gets in the way of finishing tasks, group play or learning, or comes with trouble waiting, turn-taking, listening and following simple instructions, or with delays in talking, mood swings or poor sleep.

Try this at home

Keep a short phone note of when the fidgeting peaks — hungry, tired, bored, after screens, or before a run-around? Plenty of active play earlier in the day often makes settling for stories and meals much easier, and your notes give a clinician a clear picture.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for a 5-year-old to never sit still?

A lot of movement is normal at five — young children are built to move and can usually only sit briefly for interesting activities. It's worth a developmental check if the restlessness is much greater than other children the same age, happens everywhere, and gets in the way of learning or friendships.

Does not sitting still mean my child has ADHD?

Not at all — high energy alone is not a diagnosis, and many lively five-year-olds are developing typically. Attention differences are only considered when restlessness is greater than peers, shows up across settings, and affects daily life. A clinician's gentle observation is the right next step, never an online checklist.

What can help my five-year-old settle more easily?

Plenty of active play earlier in the day, regular meals and sleep, limited screen time, and short, interesting sit-down activities all help. If settling stays very hard across home and kindergarten, an occupational therapy review can support attention and self-regulation.
