Tourette Syndrome

Should I be worried my child might have Tourette Syndrome?

Most childhood tics are temporary and harmless. Tourette Syndrome is diagnosed only when both motor and vocal tics persist beyond a year — usually from ages 5–7. Worry is a reason to observe and check, not a diagnosis. Only a clinician can confirm it.

If you've noticed your child blinking hard, sniffing or clearing their throat over and over, the worry is understandable — here's what it may mean, and what to do next.

In short

Many children develop sudden, repeated movements or sounds — called tics — and most of these are temporary and harmless. Tourette Syndrome is diagnosed only when both motor tics (like blinking, head jerks, shoulder shrugs) and at least one vocal tic (throat-clearing, sniffing, sounds) have been present for more than a year, usually starting between ages 5 and 7. A few weeks of blinking or sniffing is far more likely a passing tic than Tourette's. Worry is a good reason to observe and check — it is not, by itself, a diagnosis.

What's worth watching

  • Tics that wax and wane — they come and go, shift from one body part to another, and often worsen with excitement or tiredness
  • A pattern lasting beyond a year with both movements and sounds
  • Tics your child can briefly suppress but feels a building urge to release

Reassuringly, tics often peak around age 10–12 and ease through the teenage years. Most children need understanding and a calm environment far more than they need treatment. Tell teachers it isn't deliberate — pressure and being told to "stop" usually makes tics worse.

Seek a prompt check if tics are sudden and severe, follow an illness, cause pain, or come with big changes in mood or learning.

What to watch

Seek a prompt check if tics appear suddenly and severely, follow an illness, cause your child pain, or come alongside notable changes in mood, behaviour or learning.

Try this at home

Stay calm and avoid drawing attention to tics — never ask your child to 'stop'. Reduce pressure and tiredness, keep routines steady, and quietly let teachers know the movements aren't deliberate.

Frequently asked

How long do tics need to last to be Tourette Syndrome?

Tourette Syndrome is diagnosed only when both motor tics and at least one vocal tic have been present for more than a year. Shorter-lasting tics are usually a passing phase and often resolve on their own.

Will my child grow out of tics?

Often, yes. Many childhood tics are temporary, and even in Tourette Syndrome tics frequently peak around ages 10–12 and ease through the teenage years. A calm, low-pressure environment helps.

Should I tell my child to stop the tics?

No — asking a child to suppress tics usually increases stress and makes them worse. Staying calm, reducing pressure and informing teachers that the movements aren't deliberate is far more helpful.
