Down Syndrome

My child was diagnosed with Down syndrome — what to do first

After a Down syndrome diagnosis, the most helpful first steps are to complete the medical checks your paediatrician advises — especially heart, hearing, vision and thyroid — and to begin early developmental support as soon as you feel ready. Children with Down syndrome learn and thrive, and early, gentle therapy gives every skill its best chance. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Down Syndrome Diagnosis: What To Do First — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

A diagnosis is the beginning of understanding your child — not a verdict on who they will become.

In short

First, breathe — your child is the same beloved baby they were yesterday, and Down syndrome is one part of who they are, not the whole story. The most helpful first steps are practical: complete the medical checks your paediatrician recommends (especially heart, hearing, vision and thyroid), and begin early developmental support as soon as you feel ready. Children with Down syndrome learn, grow and thrive — and starting gentle, structured help early gives every skill the best chance to bloom.

Your first steps, gently

  • See your paediatrician for routine health screening. Babies with Down syndrome benefit from early checks of the heart (an echocardiogram is usually advised), hearing, vision, thyroid function and feeding. These are standard, manageable steps — not alarms.
  • Begin early intervention. This is the single most powerful thing you can do. Speech, occupational and physiotherapy support, started early, build communication, movement, feeding and daily-living skills steadily over time.
  • Support feeding and growth. Some babies need a little extra help with feeding and muscle tone early on — gentle therapy and your paediatrician's guidance make this easier.
  • Look after yourselves too. Connect with other parents and support groups. You are not navigating this alone, and informed, supported parents are a child's greatest advantage.
  • Take it one step at a time. You do not need every answer today. A clear, calm plan built around your child matters more than rushing.

With early support and your love, children with Down syndrome go to school, make friends, learn, work and live full, meaningful lives.

What to keep in view

Keep your paediatric appointments for ongoing checks of heart, hearing, vision, thyroid and growth. Watch your baby's feeding, weight gain and responsiveness, and raise any breathing changes, persistent feeding difficulty or unusual sleepiness promptly with your doctor. Beyond health, simply enjoy and respond to your baby — talking, cuddling and play are themselves powerful development.

Talk, sing and cuddle with your baby often — responsive, face-to-face interaction is itself powerful early development, and it costs nothing but your presence.

Frequently asked

Will my child with Down syndrome be able to learn and go to school?

Yes. Children with Down syndrome learn, attend school, form friendships and grow into capable young people. Their pace may differ, but with early support and inclusive teaching they make real, lasting progress across communication, movement and daily-living skills.

What medical checks does my baby need first?

Your paediatrician will usually advise early checks of the heart (an echocardiogram), hearing, vision, thyroid function and feeding. These are routine, manageable steps that help your child stay healthy and ready to learn.

When should we start therapy?

Early intervention can begin in infancy. The sooner gentle, structured speech, occupational and physical support starts, the more it helps build communication, movement and feeding skills. There is no need to wait.
