Imagination — pretend play, role-play, inventing stories and ideas — is closely woven with language, social understanding and flexible thinking. A 400–500 band suggests there is a clear, supportable area to build on, and it helps a clinician decide where to focus.

• It is a band, not a boundary. Scores describe a moment in time; children move within and between bands as skills grow.
• Context matters. The same band means different things for a younger versus older child, or for a child whose home language differs from the assessment language.

What helps imagination grow

• Follow your child's lead in play — join the game they invent rather than directing it.
• Offer open-ended materials — boxes, scarves, blocks and figures invite more pretend play than single-purpose toys.
• Narrate and wonder aloud — "I wonder what the bear is feeling?" gently stretches storytelling.
• Read together and pause — ask "what might happen next?" to spark prediction and ideas.
