Every child is different, but as a rough guide:- Around 12 months — first words like mama, dada, bye, and lots of pointing, gesturing and babbling.
- Around 18 months — often 10–20 words, and a growing eagerness to copy sounds and name things.
- Around 2 years — many children have 50+ words and begin joining two together (more milk, daddy go).
- Around 3 years — short sentences, and most of what they say is understood by family.
Just as important as word count is whether your child understands you, uses gestures (pointing, waving, showing you things), takes turns in babble or play, and is steadily adding new words. A child who understands well and communicates with eyes, sounds and gestures is often quietly building toward a language burst.
