only says a few words

My child only says a few words — should I be worried?

Many children who are slow to talk catch up well, but a small vocabulary is one of the easiest things to support early — so know the rough milestones and have a gentle check if your child has few words by 18 months, isn't combining words by 2 years, doesn't point or gesture, or seems not to understand you. Early support is never wasted. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Only a few words? Here's what to know — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When your little one has only a handful of words, it is natural to wonder — and the good news is that early attention is the most powerful thing you can give.

In short

Many children who are slow to start talking are simply taking their own path, and lots of them catch up beautifully. But a small vocabulary is also one of the easiest things to support early — so rather than sitting in worry, it helps to know the gentle milestones and have a quick check if anything feels behind. Early support is never wasted; it only ever helps.

What's typical, roughly

Every child is different, but as a rough guide:
  • Around 12 months — first words like mama, dada, bye, and lots of pointing, gesturing and babbling.
  • Around 18 months — often 10–20 words, and a growing eagerness to copy sounds and name things.
  • Around 2 years — many children have 50+ words and begin joining two together (more milk, daddy go).
  • Around 3 years — short sentences, and most of what they say is understood by family.

Just as important as word count is whether your child understands you, uses gestures (pointing, waving, showing you things), takes turns in babble or play, and is steadily adding new words. A child who understands well and communicates with eyes, sounds and gestures is often quietly building toward a language burst.

When to have a check

It's worth a gentle developmental check if your child:
  • has very few or no words by around 18 months, or isn't combining words by around 2 years,
  • isn't pointing, gesturing or trying to copy sounds,
  • seems not to understand simple everyday requests,
  • has lost words or skills they once had, or
  • is steadily falling further behind same-age children.

A check is reassurance, not alarm — most of the time it simply guides you on what to do next.

What to watch

Watch for very few or no words by around 18 months, no two-word phrases by around 2 years, little or no pointing or gesturing, not understanding simple everyday requests, or losing words once used — and have a gentle developmental check if your child is steadily falling behind same-age children.

Try this at home

Narrate your day in short, clear words — 'cup… water… drink' — and pause expectantly after you speak. Giving your child a beat to respond, and rewarding any sound or gesture, invites communication far more than testing them with 'say this'.

Frequently asked

How many words should my child have at 18 months and 2 years?

As a rough guide, many children have around 10–20 words by 18 months and 50 or more by 2 years, often beginning to join two words together like 'more milk'. These are averages, not pass-or-fail marks — understanding, gesturing and steadily adding new words matter just as much as the count.

Could my child just be a late talker who catches up?

Yes — many children are 'late talkers' who understand well, point and gesture, and then have a language burst. The catch is that we cannot tell in advance who will catch up on their own, so a gentle check is the safest, kindest way to be sure, and any early support only helps.

What helps a child's words grow at home?

Talk in short, clear words about what your child sees and does, read together daily, pause to give them a turn, and respond warmly to any sound, point or gesture. Following your child's interest and naming what they look at is far more powerful than drilling them to repeat words.

When should I book a check rather than wait?

Consider a developmental check if your child has very few words by around 18 months, isn't combining words by 2 years, doesn't point or gesture, seems not to understand simple requests, or has lost words once used. A check guides you on next steps — it is reassurance, not a verdict.
