has frequent meltdowns

My child has frequent meltdowns — should I be worried?

Frequent meltdowns in young children are usually normal — a sign that language, sensory processing and self-regulation are still developing, not that something is wrong. Staying calm, lowering demands and naming feelings helps most. A check is worth it if meltdowns are very intense, hard to recover from, out of step with age, or come alongside delays in talking, play or social connection. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

When the storms come thick and fast, it's natural to wonder — and reassuring to know that meltdowns are usually a child telling us something, not a sign that something is wrong with them.

In short

Frequent meltdowns in young children are very common and, in themselves, usually a normal part of a developing nervous system that hasn't yet learned to manage big feelings, sensory overload or frustration. A meltdown is not bad behaviour — it is a child who is genuinely overwhelmed and out of words. Most children settle as their language, self-regulation and sensory processing mature. A check becomes helpful when meltdowns are very intense, last a long time, are clearly out of step with your child's age, or come alongside delays in talking, play or social connection.

Understanding what's happening

A meltdown is different from a tantrum. A tantrum has a goal ("I want that sweet"); a meltdown is a flood — the child's system is overloaded and they have lost control, not chosen it. Common triggers include:
  • Communication frustration — when a child can't yet say what they need, big feelings spill over.
  • Sensory overload — noise, crowds, bright lights, hunger, tiredness or scratchy clothes can tip a sensitive child over the edge.
  • Change and transitions — stopping a loved activity, or an unexpected change in routine.
  • Still-developing regulation — the part of the brain that calms big emotions is one of the last to mature, so this is genuinely hard work for little ones.

What helps most: stay calm and close, lower the demands and the noise, name the feeling simply ("you're so cross"), and offer comfort first, problem-solving later. You are your child's calm — co-regulation comes before self-regulation.

When a check is worth it

Consider a developmental check if meltdowns are much more frequent or intense than other children the same age, last a long time or are hard to recover from, involve hurting self or others, or appear alongside delays in speech, eye contact, play, or coping with everyday change. These patterns don't mean anything is wrong — they simply mean a gentle, structured look could unlock the right support sooner.

What to watch

Meltdowns that are far more frequent or intense than peers, last a long time or are hard to recover from, involve hurting self or others, or appear alongside delays in speech, play, eye contact or coping with change.

Try this at home

During a meltdown, lower the noise and demands, get down to your child's level and stay calm — name the feeling simply ("you're so cross") and offer comfort first. Problem-solving comes after the storm passes.

Frequently asked

What's the difference between a tantrum and a meltdown?

A tantrum has a goal — a child trying to get something — and usually settles once the situation changes. A meltdown is an overload: the child's system is flooded and they have lost control rather than chosen it. Meltdowns need comfort and calm first, not consequences.

At what age do frequent meltdowns usually settle?

Big-feeling meltdowns are very common in toddlers and preschoolers and typically ease as language and self-regulation mature, often through the early school years. If they stay very intense or out of step with your child's age, a gentle developmental check can help.

When should I seek a developmental check?

Consider one if meltdowns are much more frequent or intense than peers, hard to recover from, involve hurting self or others, or appear alongside delays in talking, play, eye contact or coping with everyday change.

How can I help my child during a meltdown?

Stay calm and close, lower the noise and demands, name the feeling simply, and offer comfort before any problem-solving. You are your child's calm — co-regulation comes before self-regulation.
