Pinnacle Pinnacle® ASK

the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

Is PECS the right therapy for a child with autism?

PECS is an evidence-based picture-exchange system that helps autistic children initiate communication, and it can be an excellent fit for children who are not yet speaking or find words hard to reach. It does not delay speech and often supports it, but it is not automatically right for every child — the best choice depends on a clinical assessment of how your child communicates, what motivates them and what they're ready for. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

PECS can be a wonderful bridge to communication — but whether it's the right fit for your child depends on who they are today, not on a label.

In short

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a well-researched, evidence-based way to help children with autism initiate communication by exchanging a picture for something they want. It can be an excellent choice for a child who is not yet speaking or who finds words hard to reach — but it is not the only option, and it is not automatically right for every autistic child. The best answer comes from a clinical assessment of how your child currently communicates, what motivates them, and what they're ready for next.

What PECS is — and who it tends to suit

PECS teaches communication in structured phases: a child learns to hand a picture card to a partner to make a request, then builds towards sentences, commenting and answering questions. Its great strength is that it teaches a child to start an interaction themselves, which is often the hardest step.

PECS may be a strong fit when a child:

  • has few or no spoken words yet, or speech that isn't reliably understood;
  • is motivated by clear, tangible things (a snack, a toy, a favourite activity);
  • needs a low-pressure, visual way to express needs and reduce frustration.

It's important to know PECS does not stop or delay speech. Research and clinical experience show that giving a child a reliable way to communicate often supports spoken language to emerge, and it can sit comfortably alongside speech therapy and other approaches (including other communication tools and devices). Some children move through PECS towards speech; others use it as a lasting, valued voice — both are successes.

How we decide what's right

No single therapy suits every child. A good plan weighs your child's current communication, their motivation, their fine-motor skills, their sensory needs and your family's daily routines. PECS might be the whole plan, one part of it, or a stepping stone to a speech-generating device or natural speech. That decision belongs to a clinician who has actually observed your child — not to a checklist.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app or online form. Our therapists assess how your child communicates today and shape a plan that may include PECS, speech and language therapy, and family coaching — reviewing it as your child grows. You can learn how we build that picture in what the AbilityScore® is and how it's calculated, and start your journey from [our home](/).

What to watch

Watch how your child already tries to communicate — pointing, leading you by the hand, sounds, eye gaze or pictures — and whether they start interactions themselves or only respond. Note what truly motivates them, and any frustration when they can't make needs known; these are exactly what a clinician uses to decide if PECS fits.

Try this at home

Place a favourite snack or toy just out of reach and pause expectantly — give your child a moment to ask in any way they can, then immediately respond. Rewarding that first attempt to communicate, however small, is the heart of how PECS works.

Frequently asked

Will PECS stop my child from learning to talk?

No. PECS does not delay or replace speech. By giving a child a reliable way to communicate, it often reduces frustration and supports spoken language to emerge. Many children move through PECS towards words, while others continue to use it as a valued voice — both are good outcomes.

Is PECS only for children who can't speak at all?

Not necessarily. It's often introduced for children with few or no words, but it can also help children whose speech is hard to understand or who struggle to start conversations. A clinician decides based on your child's current communication, not just on whether they speak.

Can PECS be used alongside speech therapy?

Yes. PECS works comfortably alongside speech and language therapy and other approaches. For many children the strongest plan combines a communication tool like PECS with direct speech work and family coaching, reviewed as the child grows.

How do I know if PECS is right for my child?

The right approach depends on how your child currently communicates, what motivates them, their fine-motor and sensory needs, and your daily routines. A clinician who observes your child can advise whether PECS, a speech-generating device, natural speech work, or a combination suits them best.
