9-to-12-month-old

Is my 9-to-12-month-old on track developmentally?

Most 9-to-12-month-olds are pulling to stand, babbling, pointing, waving and playing peekaboo, and there's a wide healthy range of normal. Milestones are signposts, not pass-or-fail tests. If your baby is making steady progress, that's reassuring; if a few skills seem behind — no babbling, not responding to name, no gestures, not sitting, or losing a skill — or you simply have a worry, a calm developmental check is wise. This is early opportunity, never a label.

Watching your baby grow this year is a whole world of firsts — and noticing where they're at is exactly what a loving parent does.

In short

Most 9-to-12-month-olds are busy pulling to stand, babbling strings of sounds, pointing, waving, and playing peekaboo — and there's a wide, healthy range of normal at this age. Rather than a strict checklist to pass or fail, think of milestones as gentle signposts. If your baby is reaching most of them and making steady progress, that's reassuring; if a few seem behind or you simply have a worry, a calm developmental check is wise — not because something is wrong, but because early support works beautifully when it's needed.

What you might see at 9–12 months

By around their first birthday, many babies are:
  • Moving more — sitting steadily, crawling or bottom-shuffling, pulling up to stand, and perhaps cruising along furniture.
  • Using hands — picking up small things with thumb and finger (the pincer grasp), banging two objects together, and letting go of things on purpose.
  • Communicating — babbling "mama/dada/baba", responding to their name, copying sounds, and using gestures like waving, pointing or reaching to be picked up.
  • Connecting socially — enjoying peekaboo, looking where you point, offering a toy to show you, and showing they prefer familiar people.
  • Understanding — looking for a hidden toy, following a simple word like "no", and exploring how things work.

Babies arrive at these at their own pace, and prematurity is counted using corrected age. It's the overall pattern and steady progress that matter most.

When a developmental check is wise

Arrange a gentle review if, by around 12 months, your baby is not babbling or making sounds, not responding to their name, not using any gestures (no waving or pointing), not making eye contact, not sitting with support, or has lost a skill they once had. Trust your instinct too — what you notice every day is valuable. Seeking a check now turns a small question into an early opportunity, never a label.

What to watch

By around 12 months, seek a developmental check if your baby is not babbling or making sounds, not responding to their name, not using gestures like waving or pointing, not making eye contact, not sitting with support, or has lost a skill once had. Use corrected age for prematurity. Trust your instinct — what you notice daily matters.

Try this at home

Play simple back-and-forth games — peekaboo, rolling a ball, pointing at and naming things together. These everyday moments build communication and let you notice, gently, how your baby responds and joins in.

Frequently asked

My baby isn't crawling yet at 11 months — should I worry?

Not necessarily. Many babies skip or delay crawling and bottom-shuffle or go straight to pulling up and cruising. What matters more is overall progress — moving around to explore, using both sides of the body, and building strength. If your baby isn't sitting with support or seems very stiff or floppy, mention it at a developmental check.

How does prematurity affect these milestones?

For babies born early, milestones are measured using corrected age — your baby's age from their due date, not birth date — usually until around two years. So a baby born two months early may reach 12-month milestones a couple of months later, which is expected. Share your baby's due date with any clinician reviewing development.

My baby says no words yet — is that a problem at 12 months?

Babbling, copying sounds and using gestures like pointing and waving matter more than clear words at this age. Many babies say their first true word around their first birthday or a little after. If there's no babbling at all, no response to their name, and no gestures by 12 months, a gentle developmental check is wise.
