Is My 6-to-9-Month-Old Developing Normally in Sensory?

Between 6 and 9 months most babies explore through their senses — reaching, mouthing toys, turning to sounds and enjoying touch — within a wide, healthy range of normal. Seek a developmental check if your baby doesn't turn to sounds, doesn't follow with their eyes, feels very floppy or stiff, doesn't reach for things, is intensely distressed by ordinary touch or sound, or loses a skill. This is a reason for an early, reassuring look — not a diagnosis.

Is My 6–9 Month Old's Sensory Development Normal? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Watching your baby reach, mouth a toy and turn to your voice — these are the quiet wonders of sensory growth unfolding right on time.

In short

Between 6 and 9 months, most babies are busy exploring the world through their senses — reaching for objects, bringing everything to the mouth, turning to sounds and enjoying gentle touch. There's a wide, healthy range of normal here, so small differences in how your baby responds are usually fine. A developmental check is wise if your baby consistently doesn't turn to sounds, seems very floppy or very stiff, is extremely distressed by ordinary touch or sound, or doesn't reach for and explore things — and this means a calm look, never a label.

What's typical at 6–9 months

At this stage sensory development weaves together vision, hearing, touch and movement as your baby learns to act on the world:
  • Reaching and grasping — stretching for toys, passing objects hand to hand, and mouthing them to explore texture and shape.
  • Listening and turning — turning towards your voice or a sound, enjoying songs, and starting to respond to their name.
  • Watching closely — following moving objects and people across the room, and noticing small things.
  • Enjoying touch — settling with cuddles, tolerating different textures during play and feeding, and beginning to enjoy messy hands.
  • Steadier body — better head and trunk control, sitting with or without support, and pushing up — all signs the body's movement-and-balance senses are maturing.

Babies vary enormously, and an off day proves nothing. It's the overall pattern across days that matters.

When a gentle check helps

Arrange a developmental check, rather than waiting, if you notice your baby:
  • doesn't turn towards sounds or your voice, or doesn't startle to loud noise (always worth a hearing review);
  • doesn't follow objects or faces with their eyes, or one eye seems to wander persistently;
  • feels very floppy or very stiff, or isn't reaching for or holding things;
  • is intensely distressed by everyday touch, sound or textures, or seems unusually unresponsive to them;
  • has lost a skill they once had.

None of these is a diagnosis — they are simply good reasons for an early, reassuring look, because support at this age works beautifully.

What to watch

Seek a check if your baby doesn't turn towards sounds or your voice, doesn't follow objects or faces with their eyes, feels very floppy or very stiff, isn't reaching for or holding things, is intensely distressed by everyday touch or sound, or has lost a skill once had. Hearing should be reviewed if they don't respond to sound.

Try this at home

During play, offer toys with different textures and gentle sounds, and notice how your baby reaches, mouths and turns towards them. A short phone note of what they enjoy or avoid gives a clinician a clear, useful picture.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my 6–9 month old to put everything in their mouth?

Yes — mouthing is a healthy, important way babies explore texture, shape and temperature at this age. It usually settles as other ways of exploring grow. Just keep small or unsafe objects out of reach.

My baby doesn't always turn when I call their name. Should I worry?

An occasional miss when busy or absorbed is normal. But if your baby consistently doesn't turn to sounds or your voice, it's worth a hearing review and a gentle developmental check, rather than waiting.

My baby gets very upset by loud sounds or certain textures. Is that a problem?

Many babies are simply more sensitive, and this often eases with gentle, gradual exposure. If the distress is intense, frequent and getting in the way of feeding, play or settling, a clinician can help with simple, soothing strategies.
