Is My 12-to-18-Month-Old Developing Normally in Sensory?

Between 12 and 18 months, exploring textures, reacting to sounds, seeking movement and being a little fussy about new textures are all typically normal sensory development. Seek a gentle developmental and hearing check if your toddler doesn't respond to their name or sounds, is extremely and persistently distressed by everyday textures, sounds or lights, seems unaware of pain, or if sensory reactions come with delays in words, pointing, walking or social connection. This is a reason to assess early — not a diagnosis — because early support works best.

Is My 12-to-18-Month-Old Developing Normally in Sensory?
Toddler Sensory Development at 12–18 Months — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Watching how your toddler reacts to sounds, textures, lights and movement is a beautiful way to know them — and most of what you notice is healthy, ordinary learning.

In short

Between 12 and 18 months, most toddlers are busy exploring the sensory world — touching everything, reacting to loud sounds, enjoying messy play, and sometimes being fussy about textures or noises. This is typically normal. A gentle developmental check is wise if your child seems consistently overwhelmed or unbothered by sounds, avoids all touch and textures, doesn't respond to their name, or if sensory reactions get in the way of play, eating or comfort. None of this is a diagnosis — it simply means a clinician's calm look is helpful, because early support works wonderfully at this age.

What's typical at 12–18 months

Sensory development at this age is rich and varied. Healthy, expected patterns include:
  • Exploring with hands and mouth — touching, banging, mouthing toys to learn how they feel and work.
  • Reacting to sound — turning toward your voice, startling at a loud bang, enjoying music or rhythm.
  • Some texture preferences — being unsure about sticky, gritty or wet textures (sand, grass, certain foods) is very common and usually passes with gentle exposure.
  • Seeking movement — loving being lifted, swung, bounced or rocked; starting to climb and tumble.
  • Settling with comfort — calming to cuddles, familiar voices or a favourite soft object.

Gentle flags worth a clinician's eye — not a diagnosis — include: not responding to their name or everyday sounds (always worth a hearing check too); extreme, ongoing distress with everyday textures, sounds or lights that disrupts daily life; seeming unusually unaware of pain, hot or cold; avoiding all touch or eye contact; or sensory reactions paired with delays in pointing, words, walking or social connection.

When to act

If you notice your child consistently not responding to sound or their name, arrange a hearing and developmental check soon rather than waiting. If sensory distress is intense and persistent, or comes alongside communication or motor delays, a calm early review turns small questions into early opportunities. Trust your daily observations — they are valuable.

What to watch

Seek a hearing and developmental check if your toddler doesn't respond to their name or everyday sounds, is extremely and persistently distressed by ordinary textures, sounds or lights, avoids all touch, seems unusually unaware of pain or temperature, or if sensory reactions come alongside delays in pointing, words, walking or social connection.

Try this at home

Offer gentle, playful texture experiences — squishy dough, warm water, soft brushes — and follow your child's lead. Keep a short note of which sounds or textures upset or delight them; noticing the pattern gives a clinician a clear, useful picture.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my toddler to dislike certain textures at this age?

Yes — being unsure about sticky, gritty or wet textures like sand, grass or certain foods is very common between 12 and 18 months and usually eases with gentle, no-pressure exposure. It only needs a clinician's look if the distress is extreme, persistent and disrupts everyday play, eating or comfort.

My toddler doesn't always turn when I call their name — should I worry?

Occasional non-response when absorbed in play is normal. But if your child consistently doesn't react to their name or everyday sounds, arrange a hearing check and a developmental review soon — hearing is the first thing to rule out, and early checks are quick and reassuring.

My child loves spinning and being swung — is that a sensory problem?

Loving movement, bouncing and swinging is healthy and typical at this age. It's worth a gentle clinician's eye only if the movement-seeking is so intense it crowds out other play and connection, or comes with delays in words, pointing or social interaction.
