language development

Is it normal that my toddler isn't talking yet?

Toddler language develops across a wide, normal range — watch understanding and gestures, not just words. A check is wise if there are no words by ~18 months, fewer than a handful by 2 years, no two-word phrases by 2½, or any loss of skills. This means assess early, not a diagnosis, and always check hearing too.

Is My Toddler's Quiet Normal? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

If you're watching your toddler's words and wondering whether the quiet is normal, that gentle attentiveness is one of the best gifts you can give them.

In short

For most toddlers, language unfolds across a wide and perfectly normal range — some are early chatterboxes, others take their time and catch up beautifully. The reassuring rule is to watch understanding and communication, not just spoken words. That said, a few gentle markers are worth a developmental check: no single meaningful words by around 16–18 months, fewer than a handful of words by 2 years, no two-word phrases by 2½, or any loss of words your child once used. These mean a check is wise now — never a diagnosis.

What to watch by age

Language is more than talking. At each stage, look for the whole picture:
  • By ~12–15 months — babbling with rhythm, responding to their name, pointing or reaching to show you things, understanding simple words like no or bye.
  • By ~18 months — a few clear single words, following a simple instruction, copying sounds and gestures.
  • By ~2 years — around 50 words, beginning to join two words (more milk), pointing to body parts.
  • By ~2½–3 years — short phrases, being understood by familiar people, enjoying back-and-forth play.

Gentle flags worth a clinician's eye: no pointing or gesturing, not responding to their name, not seeming to understand everyday words, little eye contact, or losing skills they clearly had. Always have hearing checked too — even mild fluid in the ears can quietly slow speech.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online list. Our clinicians build your child's own developmental baseline and shape support around their strengths. If words are the worry, our speech therapy team can begin gentle, play-based support, and you can read more about language development and how we track it over time.

What to watch

Seek a check if there are no single words by ~18 months, fewer than a handful of words by 2 years, no two-word phrases by 2½, no pointing or gesturing, no response to their name, little understanding of everyday words — or any loss of words or skills your child once had. Always have hearing checked too.

Try this at home

Talk through your day in short, simple phrases and pause to give your toddler a turn to respond — even a sound or gesture counts. Keep a quick weekly note of new words and gestures; it becomes a clear record to share with a clinician.

Frequently asked

My toddler understands everything but doesn't talk much — is that okay?

Strong understanding is a very reassuring sign and often means spoken words are on their way. Keep encouraging back-and-forth talk and gestures. If words still aren't emerging by around 2 years, a gentle developmental check is wise.

Could a hearing problem be why my toddler isn't talking?

Yes — even mild or temporary hearing loss, often from fluid in the ears, can quietly slow speech. A hearing check is one of the first and most useful steps whenever language seems delayed.

Does being bilingual delay talking?

Growing up with two languages does not cause a language delay. Bilingual toddlers may mix languages or seem slightly slower in one, but their total vocabulary across both languages is what matters.
