communication

Is it normal that my child is not yet showing communication?

Between 3 and 7 years, children communicate at very different paces, and communication means far more than talking — it includes gestures, eye contact, listening and turn-taking. Many quieter or slower-to-talk children catch up well. Seek a calm developmental check if your child shows very few words, little gesturing, limited eye contact, no response to name, or loss of a skill — not as a diagnosis, but because early support works best at this age.

Noticing how your child connects and shares — and pausing to ask gentle questions — is loving, attentive parenting.

In short

Between 3 and 7 years, children communicate in wonderfully different ways and at different paces — and "communication" means far more than just talking. By 3, most children use short sentences, point, gesture, make eye contact and enjoy back-and-forth; some are simply quieter or take a little longer. If your child is showing very few words, little gesturing, limited eye contact, or isn't responding to their name or to simple requests, a calm developmental check is wise now — not because something is wrong, but because early support works beautifully at this age.

What to watch at 3–7 years

Communication is a rich bundle of skills — words, gestures, expressions, listening and turn-taking. Gentle flags worth a clinician's eye include:
  • Very few or no words, or speech that few people outside the family can understand by around 3–4 years.
  • Little pointing, waving or gesturing to share interest or ask for things.
  • Limited eye contact or shared smiling, or not bringing you things to show.
  • Not responding to their name or to simple, familiar instructions.
  • Loss of a skill — words or social warmth your child once had.

Many children who start slowly catch up beautifully. The point is not alarm — it's that an early, calm look turns small questions into early opportunities.

When to act

If any of these flags are present, or your instinct says something needs a closer look, arrange a developmental check now rather than waiting. What you notice every day is valuable information for a clinician.

What to watch

Seek a developmental check if your child shows very few or no words, speech hard for others to understand by 3–4 years, little pointing or gesturing, limited eye contact or shared smiling, no response to their name or simple instructions, or loss of words or social warmth once had.

Try this at home

Keep a short phone note of how your child communicates — words, gestures, pointing, eye contact, responding to their name. Noticing what they do, not only what they say, gives a clinician a clear, useful picture.

Frequently asked

My 3-year-old uses few words but understands everything — is that a concern?

Strong understanding is a wonderful sign. Some children comprehend well but are slower to speak. It's still worth a calm developmental check so a clinician can look at the whole picture — gestures, eye contact and turn-taking — and offer early support if helpful.

Does being bilingual delay communication?

Growing up with two or more languages does not cause a communication delay. Bilingual children may mix languages early on, which is normal. If you're unsure, a clinician can review your child's overall communication across all their languages.

At what age should I seek help if my child isn't talking?

If by around 2 years there are very few words, or by 3 your child isn't joining words, gesturing or being understood by familiar people, arrange a developmental check. Trust your instinct — earlier looks lead to earlier, gentler support.
