augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)

Is AAC the right therapy for a child with autism?

For many autistic children, AAC — from picture boards to speech-generating apps — is a strong, evidence-backed support, especially where speech is delayed or unreliable. Research shows AAC does not stop speech developing and often supports it. Whether it suits your child depends on their profile, clarified by a speech-language assessment. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

When words are hard to find, the right tools give your child a voice — and AAC is one of the most powerful, evidence-backed ways to open that door.

In short

Yes — for many children on the autism spectrum, AAC is a genuinely good fit, especially where spoken language is delayed, unreliable or absent. AAC means any way of communicating that adds to or stands in for speech — from picture cards and visual boards to speech-generating apps on a tablet. Crucially, decades of research show AAC does not stop speech developing; for many children it actually supports talking by lowering frustration and making communication successful. Whether it is right for your child depends on their profile — which is exactly what an assessment with a speech-language therapist clarifies.

What AAC is — and why it helps autistic children

AAC sits on a spectrum of its own:
  • Unaided — gestures, signs, facial expression (no equipment needed).
  • Low-tech aided — picture exchange systems, communication books, visual boards.
  • High-tech aided — speech-generating devices and tablet apps that 'speak' the words a child selects.

For autistic children, AAC can help because:

  • It gives a reliable way to be understood right now, reducing the frustration and distress that often drive behaviour.
  • It is visual and concrete — playing to a common strength in autistic learning.
  • It builds, not blocks, speech — the research consensus is that AAC encourages communication and, for many, supports emerging spoken words too.
  • It supports understanding as well as expression — visuals help a child make sense of routines, choices and feelings.

AAC is rarely the only support — it usually works alongside speech-language therapy, and often occupational or behavioural support, woven into everyday play and routines.

When AAC is the right call

AAC is worth exploring if your child has few or no spoken words by the toddler years, communicates mostly through pulling, pointing or distress, understands more than they can say, or finds speech effortful and inconsistent. There is no minimum age and no prerequisite skills — a child does not have to 'fail' at speech first. The earlier a child has a way to communicate, the better. A speech-language therapist matches the type of AAC to your child's motor skills, vision, interests and the way your family lives.

What to watch

Watch for few or no spoken words in the toddler years, communicating mainly through pulling, pointing or distress, understanding far more than your child can say, or speech that feels effortful and inconsistent — all signs a communication assessment would help.

Try this at home

Pair every spoken request with a picture or gesture — for example, hold up a 'more' card while saying 'more' at snack time. This gives your child a reliable way to respond and gently models communication, with no pressure to talk.

Frequently asked

Will using AAC stop my child from learning to talk?

No. This is the most common worry, but the research consensus is the opposite — AAC does not suppress speech. By making communication successful and reducing frustration, it often supports emerging spoken words. Many children use AAC alongside developing their own speech.

Is my child too young to start AAC?

There is no minimum age and no skills a child must master first. The earlier a child has a reliable way to communicate, the better. A speech-language therapist will match the type of AAC to your child's current abilities and your family's daily life.

Does AAC mean my child needs an expensive device?

Not necessarily. AAC ranges from free, unaided methods like gestures and signs, to low-tech picture boards, to high-tech apps and devices. A therapist helps choose what fits your child's needs, motor skills and interests — simple tools are often where families start.
