Verbal

How is Verbal scored on the AbilityScore?

Verbal skills on the AbilityScore are measured through a clinician-administered, structured assessment that observes how your toddler uses sounds, words and early phrases, with play-based tasks and a conversation about communication at home. There is no single online number — a Pinnacle clinician builds the picture against your child's own baseline, and any score or diagnosis is formed only at a centre.

How Verbal Is Scored on the AbilityScore® — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every word your toddler tries — every babble, name and tiny phrase — tells a story worth understanding gently and clearly.

In short

Verbal skills are measured on the AbilityScore® through a clinician-administered, structured assessment that observes how your toddler uses sounds, words and early phrases to communicate, alongside play-based tasks and a warm conversation about how your child talks at home. There is no single online number — a qualified Pinnacle clinician builds the picture against your child's own baseline, so the result is a starting point for support, never a label rushed onto your little one.

How verbal skills are looked at

For a toddler (roughly 12–36 months), "verbal" is read through real, everyday communication rather than one test. A clinician gently observes:
  • Sounds and babble — the range and clarity of sounds your child makes.
  • Words emerging — how many words your child uses meaningfully, and whether vocabulary is growing.
  • Putting words together — early two-word phrases and how your child combines ideas.
  • Using words to connect — pointing, naming, requesting, and responding to you.
  • Understanding (receptive language) — because comprehension underpins talking, the clinician notes how your child follows simple words and instructions.

This is gathered through play, observation and your own everyday examples — so the assessment reflects how your child truly communicates, not a one-off performance.

What to watch

By around 18 months most toddlers say several single words; by 24 months many use two-word phrases and a growing vocabulary. If your child uses very few or no words, isn't combining words by 2.5–3 years, or seems not to understand simple instructions, a gentle professional look is worthwhile.

Try this at home

Narrate your day in short, clear words — name objects, pause expectantly, and respond warmly to every attempt your toddler makes to communicate. Repetition in everyday moments is how words grow.

Frequently asked

Is there a single Verbal score I can find online?

No. Verbal is measured only through a clinician-administered, structured assessment at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, where a qualified clinician observes your child against their own baseline. Online figures cannot replace this.

What age is right to assess Verbal skills?

From around 12 months onwards, early communication can be gently observed. Between 12 and 36 months a clinician looks at babble, emerging words and early phrases through play and conversation.

Will a low Verbal result mean my child has a problem?

Not by itself. The AbilityScore® is a starting point that helps shape supportive next steps. Any diagnosis is formed only by a qualified clinician at a Pinnacle centre, never from a single score.
