Reasoning

How Reasoning Is Scored on the AbilityScore

Reasoning is not scored by a single test. On the AbilityScore®, it is read through a clinician-administered structured assessment that observes how your toddler explores cause and effect, solves small problems, sorts, predicts and learns from feedback — always against your child's own baseline, never ranked against others. Only a Pinnacle clinician can confirm what it means.

Reasoning is your toddler's earliest problem-solving — figuring out how things work, what comes next, and why — and we measure it gently, by watching them think.

In short

Reasoning is not scored with a single test or a quiz. On the AbilityScore®, it is read through a clinician-administered structured assessment that watches how your toddler explores, predicts, sorts, solves little problems and learns from what they try. Your child is always measured against their own developing baseline — not ranked against other children. The result becomes a clear, practical picture of how your toddler thinks, and where a small nudge would help most.

How reasoning is observed

In the toddler years (roughly 12–36 months), reasoning shows up in everyday play, so our clinicians look at real moments rather than abstract questions:
  • Cause and effect — does your child realise that pressing, dropping or pulling something makes a thing happen, and repeat it on purpose?
  • Problem-solving — when a toy is stuck or out of reach, do they try a new way, use a tool, or ask for help?
  • Early sorting and matching — grouping by shape, size or colour, and noticing 'same' versus 'different'.
  • Prediction and sequence — anticipating what comes next in a familiar routine or simple game.
  • Learning from feedback — adjusting after something doesn't work, rather than repeating the same attempt.

The clinician gathers this through guided play, observation and a warm conversation with you about what your child does at home — because the calmest, truest picture comes from a child who feels safe.

What to watch

By around 2–3 years, gently note if your toddler rarely tries a new way when a toy is stuck, doesn't link cause and effect in play, shows little curiosity about how things work, or doesn't sort or match simple objects. These are observations to share, not diagnoses — a Pinnacle clinician can give a calm, clear picture.

Try this at home

Turn play into thinking: offer simple problems — a toy just out of reach, a lid that needs twisting, blocks to sort by colour — and pause before helping. That little wait lets your toddler try, predict and learn, which is exactly how reasoning grows.

Frequently asked

Is there one test that gives a Reasoning score?

No. Reasoning is measured through a clinician-administered structured assessment that watches your toddler explore, solve and learn across guided play and everyday moments, combined with a conversation with you — not a single quiz or online number.

Is my toddler compared to other children?

No. The AbilityScore® reads your child against their own developing baseline, so the focus is on how they are growing and where a gentle nudge helps — not on ranking them against others.

At what age can reasoning be meaningfully assessed?

Early reasoning shows up from about 12 months as cause-and-effect play, and grows through the toddler years. A clinician can observe it meaningfully across 12–36 months through play-based, age-appropriate tasks.

Who decides what the result means?

Only a qualified clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre can form a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis. Online information is general guidance, never a diagnosis.
