Developmental Trauma

How is Developmental Trauma assessed in children under 7?

Developmental trauma in children under 7 is assessed through careful, relationship-based observation and caregiver history rather than a single test — looking at regulation, sleep, play, relationships and a structured developmental profile. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle centre under clinician care.

Assessing Developmental Trauma in Under-7s — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a young child has been through hard early experiences, what parents really want to know is: how do we understand its effect — gently, and properly?

In short

In children under 7, developmental trauma isn't assessed with a single test or a quick label. A Pinnacle clinician builds a careful picture over time — listening to your family's story, observing how your child plays, relates, regulates and sleeps, and screening development across communication, emotion, movement and self-care. The aim is to understand how early stress may be shaping your child's functioning today, and where warm, targeted support will help most.

How assessment works at this age

Because very young children show distress through behaviour and the body rather than words, assessment is largely observational and relationship-based. A clinician will explore:
  • Your child's history — significant separations, medical events, disruptions or frightening experiences, gathered sensitively from caregivers.
  • Regulation and the body — sleep, feeding, startle responses, soothing, and how easily your child settles after upset.
  • Relationships and play — how your child connects with familiar adults, responds to comfort, and explores.
  • Developmental profile — a structured, clinician-administered assessment of communication, emotional and social functioning, to separate trauma-related responses from other developmental needs.

This is strengths-first: we map what your child can do and build from there.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, by qualified clinicians — never from an online form or an app. From there we shape a calm, paced plan around your child and family, drawing on child & family therapy and our understanding of developmental trauma.

What to watch

Persistent trouble settling or sleeping, big startle reactions, difficulty being comforted, sudden changes in play or relating, or distress that seems out of step with the situation — especially after a frightening or disruptive experience.

Try this at home

Predictable, gentle routines are themselves a form of healing — consistent meal, play and bedtime rhythms help a young child's body learn it is safe. You don't need to prepare your child for assessment; bring them just as they are.

Frequently asked

Is there a single test for developmental trauma in young children?

No. In children under 7, there is no single test. A clinician builds an understanding over time through caregiver history, observation of play and relationships, and a structured developmental profile, because young children express distress through behaviour and the body rather than words.

Will my child be labelled at the assessment?

Assessment is about understanding your child, not labelling them. It is strengths-first — mapping what your child can do and where support helps most. Any clinical conclusion is formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Do I need to prepare my child beforehand?

No preparation is needed. Bring your child exactly as they are on the day. The assessment is designed to meet your child where they are, in a calm, unhurried way.
