A thorough DCD assessment looks at the whole picture, not one moment:- Your story matters first. Clinicians ask how movement difficulties show up at home and nursery or school — getting dressed, mealtimes, play, handwriting — and whether they are getting in the way of daily life.
- Structured motor observation. A trained therapist watches both gross motor skills (running, jumping, balance) and fine motor skills (gripping a pencil, doing buttons, threading), using age-referenced tools.
- Ruling other things out. Because clumsiness can have many causes, the clinician considers vision, muscle tone, general development and any medical factors before pointing to DCD.
- Age and opportunity. A child must have had the chance to learn a skill before we judge it. This is why a confident assessment usually waits until around 5 years, with watchful support before then.
DCD is not a sign of low intelligence or lack of effort — children with DCD are often working harder than their peers to do the same task.
