For a toddler (roughly 12–36 months), attention is read through behaviour in real moments, because focus at this age is naturally brief and easily pulled by the world around them. A skilled clinician gently observes:- Engagement — how readily your child tunes in to a person, toy or activity.
- Sustained focus — how long they stay with something interesting before drifting.
- Shared attention — whether your child looks where you point, follows your gaze, and shares enjoyment with you.
- Shifting and returning — how they move between activities and come back to a task after a distraction.
- Context — sleep, hunger, language understanding and sensory needs are all considered, because these shape attention and can look like difficulty when they are not.
The clinician brings these observations together as a structured picture, always understood alongside your child's full story — never from one snapshot.

Seek a gentle professional look if your toddler rarely tunes in to people or toys, seldom follows your point or gaze, seems unusually hard to engage even when rested and fed, or appears markedly less focused than peers of the same age.
