How Prematurity Affects Your Child's Communication Development

- Hearing — prematurity slightly raises the chance of hearing differences, which directly shape speech; this is why newborn hearing screening matters so much.
- Feeding and oral skills — early sucking and swallowing challenges sometimes overlap with the muscles used for speech.
Remember to always judge progress by corrected age until about two years. A baby born two months early should be measured against a two-month-younger timeline — what looks like a delay is often perfectly on track.
