Global Developmental Delay

How Global Developmental Delay Affects Sensory Development

Global Developmental Delay often affects how a child processes the senses — they may be over- or under-sensitive to sound, touch, texture, movement or light. Because movement, thinking and sensory systems develop together, sensory differences are common with GDD and respond well to early occupational therapy and predictable routines.

GDD and a Child's Sensory Development — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child's development is delayed across several areas, the way they take in the world through their senses is often part of the picture too.

In short

Global Developmental Delay (GDD) means a young child is meeting milestones later than expected in two or more areas of development. Because the systems that handle movement, thinking and the senses grow together, many children with GDD also process sensory information differently — they may be more or less sensitive to sounds, textures, light, movement or touch than other children their age. This is not a separate fault; it is part of the same developing nervous system, and it responds well to early, playful support.

How GDD touches the senses

Sensory development is how a child learns to notice, sort and respond to everything around them. With GDD you may see a child who:
  • Covers ears at everyday sounds, or seems not to react to loud noise
  • Dislikes certain textures — food, clothing labels, messy play, or sand and grass
  • Seeks lots of movement (spinning, crashing) or avoids it and seems unsteady
  • Mouths objects, or doesn't notice mess on hands and face
  • Tires quickly in busy, bright or noisy places

These patterns can affect feeding, dressing, play and attention. The encouraging part: sensory processing is one of the most responsive areas to occupational therapy and a calm, predictable everyday routine.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online form. What to watch

Watch for strong reactions to everyday sounds, textures or messy play; avoiding or constantly seeking movement; not noticing mess on hands or face; or quick overwhelm in busy, bright places.

Try this at home

Build short, predictable sensory play into the day — a few minutes of squishy dough, water play or gentle swinging — and watch what your child enjoys versus avoids. Offer, never force.

Frequently asked

Does every child with GDD have sensory difficulties?

No. Sensory differences are common with GDD because development happens together across systems, but not every child is affected. A clinician can tell you what is happening for your child specifically.

Can sensory differences in GDD improve?

Yes. Sensory processing is one of the most responsive areas to support. Occupational therapy and calm, predictable daily routines often make a real difference over time.

Is this the same as autism?

Not necessarily. Sensory differences appear in many developmental profiles, including GDD and autism. Only a qualified clinician can establish what fits your child, and a developmental check is the right first step.
