Dyslexia is a lifelong difference in how the brain processes the sounds and patterns of written language — but how it looks changes at every stage. In the early school years it shows up as difficulty linking letters to sounds; in middle childhood as slow, effortful reading and shaky spelling; and by the teen years often as a child who reads accurately but tiredly, leaning hard on comprehension and clever workarounds. With the right structured support, children build strong, durable reading skills — the difficulty becomes something they manage with confidence, not something that defines them.

How it changes across the years

Early years (around 4–6): You may notice trouble learning letter names and sounds, rhyming difficulties, muddling similar-sounding words, or a family history of reading struggles. Reading itself hasn't fully begun, so the focus is on sound-awareness skills.

Early school years (around 6–8): Sounding out words is slow and effortful, spelling is inconsistent, the child may guess from pictures, reverse letters longer than peers, and tire quickly during reading. This is the most common stage for dyslexia to be recognised.

Middle childhood (around 9–12): Many children read more accurately but stay slow. Reading aloud feels exhausting, spelling and written expression lag behind their clearly bright ideas, and homework can take far longer than it should.

Teen years and beyond: Decoding often improves, but reading speed, spelling and note-taking remain effortful. Strengths in reasoning, creativity and problem-solving frequently shine. With strategies, assistive technology and well-earned self-knowledge, many teens read and learn confidently.
