Developmental Coordination Disorder

How DCD Affects a Child's Sensory Development

DCD is primarily a motor coordination difficulty, but movement and the senses are tightly linked, so many affected children also process body-position, balance and touch information differently. Unclear sensory feedback makes movement clumsy and tiring. Sensory and motor differences often travel together but are distinct, and a whole-picture developmental check is worthwhile when they affect confidence or daily life.

How DCD Affects a Child's Sensory Development
DCD and Your Child's Sensory World — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

You watch your child trip over their own feet, recoil from a tag in their shirt, or seem lost on a busy playground — and you sense it's all somehow connected.

In short

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is primarily about motor coordination, but movement and the senses are deeply linked — so many children with DCD also process sensory information differently. The body relies on hidden senses of body position (proprioception) and balance (vestibular) to move smoothly, and when these signals are unclear, movements become clumsy, effortful and tiring. This is not laziness or carelessness — it is how your child's developing nervous system is reading the world, and with the right support it can grow stronger.

How DCD touches sensory development

Movement is built on sensory feedback. To catch a ball, button a shirt or climb stairs, the brain must constantly know where the body is in space and adjust in real time. In DCD, this loop can be less reliable:
  • Proprioception (body awareness) — children may press too hard or too soft, bump into things, or need to look at their hands to do what others do automatically.
  • Vestibular (balance and motion) — some children feel unsteady, avoid swings or heights, while others crave spinning and rough play to "feel" their body.
  • Touch sensitivity — clothing tags, certain textures, food consistencies or messy play may feel overwhelming, or conversely go unnoticed.
  • Motor planning (praxis) — turning a sensory plan into a smooth sequence of movements takes extra effort, so new physical tasks tire them quickly.

Not every child with DCD has sensory differences, and not every sensory difference means DCD — they often travel together but are distinct. What matters is the whole picture: how your child moves, senses and copes across the day.

When it's worth a closer look

Consider a developmental check if your child is noticeably clumsier than peers the same age, avoids or strongly seeks movement and touch, tires quickly with physical tasks, or if motor and sensory struggles are affecting confidence, play or school. Earlier support is gentler and more effective.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online form or an app. Our therapists look at movement and the senses together, building a calm, practical plan around how your child actually experiences the world. Learn more about Developmental Coordination Disorder, explore occupational therapy for motor and sensory support, or understand your child's starting point with the AbilityScore.

What to watch

Notice clumsiness beyond peers the same age, avoiding or craving movement and touch, distress over clothing textures or food consistencies, needing to look at hands to do everyday tasks, and quick tiring with physical play — especially when it dents confidence.

Try this at home

Build in 'heavy work' play — pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing — for a few minutes before tricky tasks. This feeds proprioception and often helps a child feel more organised and steady in their body.

Frequently asked

Is DCD the same as a sensory processing problem?

No — DCD is primarily about motor coordination, while sensory processing is about how the brain interprets information like touch, balance and body position. They often occur together because smooth movement depends on clear sensory feedback, but they are distinct, which is why a whole-picture assessment matters.

Why does my child with DCD seem to bump into things or press too hard?

This often reflects proprioception — the body's hidden sense of position and force. When those signals are less clear, a child may misjudge how hard to press or where their body is in space, leading to bumps and heavy-handed movements. It is not carelessness, and it can improve with support.

Can sensory and motor differences in DCD improve?

Yes. With targeted occupational therapy and everyday practice, children can build stronger body awareness, balance and motor planning over time. Earlier, consistent support tends to be gentler and more effective, and many children grow noticeably more confident.
