How AbilityScore Tracks Progress with Hearing Impairment

The AbilityScore tracks progress in a child with hearing impairment by establishing a baseline across all developmental domains and repeating the same clinician-administered profile at each review. The calibrated 0–1000 measure shows real growth in listening, language, play and independence over time, separate from the hearing device. A clinical AbilityScore is formed only at a Pinnacle centre under clinician care.

Tracking Progress with Hearing Impairment — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child has a hearing impairment, parents need progress they can see — not just a hearing test, but how communication and connection are growing.

In short

The AbilityScore® is a single, easy-to-read measure on a 0–1000 scale that shows where your child's development stands today — across communication, thinking, movement, social connection, emotional regulation, sensory processing and self-care. For a child with hearing impairment, it tracks progress by measuring the same domains the same way at each review, so you can see growth in listening, language, play and independence over time — separate from the hearing device itself.

How it tracks progress

At the first visit a clinician establishes a baseline AbilityScore®, capturing where your child is across every developmental domain. Because hearing impairment most affects communication, the profile pays close attention to receptive and expressive language, attention to sound, and social interaction — while still holding the whole-child view.

At each re-assessment, the same structured, clinician-administered profile is repeated. Because the measure is calibrated and consistent, the change in score reflects real developmental movement — for example, growth in vocabulary, turn-taking, or following spoken instructions after hearing-device fitting and speech therapy. This turns abstract worry into a clear curve you can follow, and helps the team adjust the plan when progress slows.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® — and any diagnosis — is established only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, by qualified clinicians, never from an app or online form. That governance is what makes each number trustworthy and comparable over time. Explore more on hearing impairment, how the AbilityScore® works, and your child's speech therapy journey.

What to watch

Watch how your child responds to sound and speech across settings — turning to their name, following simple spoken instructions, growing vocabulary, and joining back-and-forth play. Track these between reviews; steady growth matters more than any single moment.

Try this at home

Talk, sing and narrate everyday moments at your child's level — even small, consistent listening-and-language practice between therapy sessions supports the kind of progress the AbilityScore captures over time.

Frequently asked

Does the AbilityScore measure my child's hearing level?

No — hearing level is measured by audiology tests. The AbilityScore measures development, especially how listening, language, social connection and independence are growing over time, which is what shows whether support is working.

How often is the AbilityScore re-assessed?

Re-assessment timing is decided by your clinician based on your child's plan. Repeating the same structured profile at each review lets the team see real developmental change and adjust therapy when needed.

Can progress show even if my child still has hearing impairment?

Yes. Progress is about developmental growth — vocabulary, turn-taking, following instructions, play and self-care — which can keep improving with the right hearing support and speech therapy, regardless of the underlying hearing level.
