Keeping your young child engaged in online therapy

Young children engage best in online therapy when it feels like play with a trusted grown-up beside them. Keep sessions short, sit close and join in, reduce distractions, use simple home props, and follow the therapist's lead. Restlessness is normal — engagement is built minute by minute.

The screen is just a window — the connection happens through play, and you are the bridge.

In short

Young children stay engaged in online therapy when the session feels like play with a trusted grown-up beside them, not a class to sit through. Keep sessions short and lively, sit close and join in, remove distractions, and follow your therapist's lead with simple props from around your home. A wriggly, restless child is normal — engagement is built minute by minute, not demanded all at once.

Practical ways to keep your child tuned in

Set the stage
  • Pick a quiet corner with good light and few visual distractions — switch off the TV and put away tempting toys.
  • Sit your child in a supportive chair or on your lap so their body feels settled and ready.
  • Keep favourite props the therapist asks for within reach: bubbles, a ball, picture cards, a snack.

Be the bridge, not the bystander

  • Sit beside your child, not behind the camera. Your warmth and presence make the screen feel safe.
  • Mirror the therapist's energy — clap, sing, point and celebrate every small try.
  • Let the therapist lead; resist correcting or quizzing your child yourself unless asked.

Work with their attention, not against it

  • Expect short bursts — a toddler's focus is naturally brief, and good online sessions are paced for that.
  • Use movement breaks; standing, stretching or a quick dance can reset a restless child.
  • End on a high — finish while it is still fun, so your child looks forward to next time.

If your child consistently cannot settle, becomes very distressed, or seems unwell during sessions, tell your therapist — pacing and format can always be adjusted to suit your child.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app or an online form. Our therapists design online therapy around your child's real attention span and home setting, and your child's starting point is captured through a clinician-administered structured assessment so every session builds on the last. What to watch

Watch for whether your child can settle for short bursts with your support. Persistent distress, inability to settle at all, or seeming unwell during sessions is worth flagging to your therapist so the pacing or format can be adjusted.

Try this at home

Sit beside your child — not behind the camera. Your presence, claps and cheers turn a screen into a safe, shared playtime your child wants to return to.

Frequently asked

How long should an online therapy session be for a toddler?

Young children focus in short bursts, so good online sessions are paced accordingly and broken up with movement and play. Your Pinnacle therapist sets the right length for your child's age and attention span, and adjusts it as your child settles into the routine.

What if my child keeps walking away from the screen?

This is completely normal for young children. Try a supportive chair or your lap, reduce distractions, and use movement breaks. Tell your therapist — they can change the activities or pacing so your child stays interested for longer.

Do I need to participate, or can I leave my child with the screen?

Your active presence matters most. Sitting beside your child, joining the play and celebrating small tries makes the session feel safe and engaging. You are the bridge between your child and the therapist.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person for young children?

Online therapy can be highly effective when it is well-designed and a parent is involved. Your child's starting point and progress are tracked through a clinician-administered structured assessment at a Pinnacle centre, so the plan stays accurate whether sessions are online or in person.
