Handling a 1-Year-Old Not Responding to Their Name

At one, your little one is busy learning that their name means "that's me!" — and you can gently help that click into place.

Not turning to their name at 12 months is common and often simply means the skill is still developing — many one-year-olds are too absorbed in play to respond every time. Try calling from close by, at eye level, in a quiet room, and watch whether your child responds to you within a few weeks. If response to name stays inconsistent across settings, or you also notice limited pointing, eye contact or babble, a gentle developmental check is worth booking — and a quick hearing check is always wise first.

Helping it click at home

Responding to name is a back-and-forth skill, and the easiest way to build it is to make turning towards you feel rewarding:

• Get close and low. Call your child's name from about an arm's length away, at their eye level, rather than from across a noisy room.
• One name, warmly. Use their actual name (not "baby" or nicknames each time), say it once or twice, then pause and wait — give them a moment to turn.
• Reward the turn. The instant they look, light up — smile, clap, a cuddle, or show them something they love. The response becomes worth giving.
• Cut the background. Try when the TV is off and the room is calm; young ears filter out names easily in noise.
• Pair name with play. During bubbles, peek-a-boo or rolling a ball, say their name just before the fun bit so the name predicts something good.

When to have it checked

First, rule out hearing — even a recent cold or fluid in the ears can dull responses, so a hearing check is the sensible first step. Then watch over two to four weeks of trying these games. Book a developmental check if response to name stays absent across home and other places, or if it sits alongside little pointing or showing, reduced eye contact, no babble or gestures by 12 months, or any loss of skills your child once had. Persistent parental gut feeling is itself a good reason to ask.
