Non-Verbal / Minimally Verbal Presentation

Supporting Communication in a Non-Verbal or Minimally Verbal Child

A non-verbal or minimally verbal child is still communicating — through gestures, sounds, gaze and behaviour. Support it by responding to every attempt as meaningful, building daily reasons to communicate, and adding tools like signs, pictures and AAC devices, which help rather than hinder spoken words.

Every child has something to say — sometimes the work is finding the right way for them to say it.

In short

A child who is non-verbal or minimally verbal is still communicating — through gestures, sounds, eye gaze, behaviour and reaching. You support communication by honouring every one of these as meaningful, building reliable ways to be understood (including pictures, signs and speech-generating devices), and weaving practice into ordinary daily moments. Crucially, giving a child a communication device or pictures does not stop speech — research consistently shows it often helps spoken words grow.

How to support communication at home

Treat everything as communication
  • Respond to gestures, sounds, glances and behaviour as if they are words — "You're reaching! You want the ball." This teaches your child that communicating works.
  • Pause and wait. Leave a generous, expectant gap so your child has room to initiate, rather than filling every silence.

Build in reasons to communicate

  • Offer choices instead of guessing — hold up two snacks and wait for a reach, a look or a sound.
  • Place favourite things in sight but out of reach, so your child has a real reason to request.
  • Follow their lead — comment on whatever they are already interested in, and join their play rather than redirecting it.

Add tools, don't withhold them

  • Pair your words with simple gestures, signs and pictures. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) — from picture cards to speech-generating apps and devices — gives an immediate voice while spoken language develops.
  • Keep your own language short and clear: one or two words at a time, repeated naturally across the day.
  • Celebrate and respond to any attempt, every time — consistency is what builds confidence.

When to seek a structured assessment

If your child is not yet using words, or uses very few, a speech and language assessment helps map exactly how they communicate now and what to build next — including whether AAC would help. There is no need to wait; early, individualised support is the most reliable way to grow communication for a child with a non-verbal or minimally verbal presentation.

What to watch

Watch for how your child already communicates — reaching, looking, leading you by the hand, vocalising. If word use isn't growing over a few months, or your child seems frustrated trying to be understood, arrange a speech and language assessment without waiting.

Try this at home

Offer a real choice at every meal — hold up two foods and wait expectantly for a look, reach or sound, then respond instantly: 'You chose the banana!'

Frequently asked

Will using pictures or a communication device stop my child from talking?

No — this is a common worry, but the evidence points the other way. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), such as picture cards and speech-generating devices, gives your child an immediate way to be understood and often supports the growth of spoken words rather than replacing them.

My child is minimally verbal — is it too late to help?

It is never too late. Children continue to develop communication across childhood, and individualised support tailored to how your child communicates now can open new ways of connecting at any age. A speech and language assessment helps map the best next steps.

How do I know if my non-verbal child understands me?

Many children understand far more than they can express. Watch how your child responds to familiar routines, names of favourite things, and simple requests. A structured assessment can separate understanding (receptive language) from expression, which shapes the support plan.
