Visual Aids and Storytelling at Home: A Parent's Guide

Visual aids and storytelling turn words into something children can see — pictures, photo books and picture cards. At home, read and name pictures, offer picture choices, use photos to talk about the day, and tell short repetitive stories that invite your child to join in. Keep sessions short, warm and led by your child's interests.

Visual Aids & Storytelling at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every picture you point to and every story you tell together is a tiny bridge to your child's growing words, ideas and imagination.

In short

Visual aids and storytelling work by giving your child something to see while they learn to understand and use language — pictures, photos, simple picture cards and books that turn abstract words into concrete things. At home you can build this into everyday moments: name pictures as you read, use photos to talk about the day, and let your child point, choose and "tell" parts of the story too. It is playful, low-pressure, and you do not need special equipment.

How to do it at home

Start with everyday pictures
  • Keep a few favourite picture books within reach and "read" them often — point to one picture, name it, then pause and let your child respond in any way (a look, a point, a sound, a word).
  • Make a small photo book of familiar people and places — "Nana", "our dog", "bath time". Talk about each one in short, clear sentences.

Let pictures support choices and routines

  • Offer two picture choices: "Do you want the apple or the banana?" Hold up both so the word and the object connect.
  • Use simple picture cards or photos for daily steps — wake, brush, eat, play — so your child can see what comes next. This builds understanding and reduces frustration.

Make storytelling a two-way game

  • Tell short, repetitive stories about your child's own day — "First we walked to the park, then we saw a big dog!" Familiar stories are easiest to join in with.
  • Pause at predictable moments and let your child fill the gap — "The cow says…?" Celebrate any attempt.
  • Add actions, sounds and gestures. Movement and expression help children hold meaning and stay engaged.

Keep it warm and short
Five to ten joyful minutes beats a long session. Follow your child's lead, repeat favourites, and let them turn pages, choose pictures and be the storyteller too.

When a little extra help is useful

These activities suit a wide range of children. If your child rarely looks at pictures, isn't pointing or sharing interest, or understanding and talking seem behind same-age friends, it's worth a friendly developmental check — not as a worry, but to make sure the right support is in place early.

What to watch

If your child rarely looks at or points to pictures, doesn't share interest in books, or understanding and talking seem behind same-age friends despite regular play, arrange a friendly developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Make a tiny photo book of familiar people and places, and 'read' it together each day — point, name, then pause and let your child respond in any way.

Frequently asked

What age can I start using visual aids and storytelling?

You can start in the first year — naming pictures in a board book or showing photos of family. Keep it short and playful, and follow your child's lead. There's no minimum age for sharing pictures and simple stories.

Do I need special cards or equipment?

No. Everyday picture books, family photos and pictures from magazines work beautifully. Simple printed picture cards can help with choices and daily routines, but they are optional.

What if my child won't sit and look at the pictures?

That's common. Keep sessions to a few minutes, let your child turn pages or carry the book, add actions and sounds, and stop while it's still fun. Following their interests works better than insisting.

How will I know if my child needs more help?

If your child rarely shares interest in pictures or books, isn't pointing, or understanding and talking seem behind same-age peers, a friendly developmental check can guide you. A clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre can advise on the right support.
