Everyday activities that build communication

Follow your child's lead
  • Watch what they're already interested in, then join it and talk about it — "You found the red car! Red car go!"
  • Get down to their eye level so your face and your words arrive together.

Create reasons to communicate

  • Offer choices — hold up two snacks and wait: "Banana or biscuit?"
  • Pause a favourite routine (peek-a-boo, a song, bubbles) and wait expectantly for them to ask for more with a sound, sign, look or word.
  • Put a wanted toy slightly out of reach so they signal to you.

Build the back-and-forth

  • Respond to every attempt — a point, a babble, a glance — as if it were a sentence. This teaches "my communication works".
  • Use the pause: ask, then count silently to ten. Many children just need more time to take their turn.
  • Add one word to what they say — if they say "dog", you say "big dog" or "dog run".

Talk through your day

  • Narrate routines (bath, meals, dressing) in short, clear phrases. Repetition across familiar routines is how words stick.
  • Sing songs and read picture books, leaving gaps for your child to fill the next word or action.

A simple home rhythm

Aim for little and often rather than long sessions. Three or four playful two-minute bursts across the day — at mealtime, bathtime, on the floor with toys — do more than one long drill. Keep it joyful; if either of you stops enjoying it, take a break and try later. Track tiny wins: a new gesture, a longer look, a first attempt at a sound. These are real progress in use of communication.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child responds to you, takes turns, and uses gestures, sounds or words to share and request. If by their expected age they rarely point, respond to their name, or attempt words — or if skills seem to fade — arrange a developmental check rather than waiting.
