When your little one starts stacking two words together — "more milk", "daddy go" — a whole new world of conversation opens up, and your living room is the best place to grow it.

Two-word phrases usually emerge once a child has a solid bank of single words (often around 50) and start combining them — "want ball", "big dog", "mummy up". Activities you can do at home

Pause and wait. After you model a phrase, count silently to five. That quiet space gives your child time to try. Resist filling every gap.

Sing and read. Songs and simple picture books with repetition ("jump up", "all gone") let phrases stick through rhythm and repetition.

Keep it playful and pressure-free — celebrate every attempt, even an approximation. Children learn language fastest when they feel relaxed and connected.

When to check in with someone

If your child is past 24 months with very few single words, or is past 30 months and not yet combining two words, it is worth a friendly developmental check — not because anything is "wrong", but because early support is gentle and effective. A hearing check is always a sensible first step too.
