TwoStep Direction

Practising Two-Step Directions With Your Child at Home

Build two-step directions at home through play and daily routines: start with one motivating instruction, add a second linked step, pair words with gestures at first, then fade the help. Keep it short, joyful and frequent rather than a formal drill.

Two-Step Directions: Easy Home Practice — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Two-step directions — "Pick up your shoes and put them by the door" — are tiny wins that build a child's listening, memory and independence, and you can grow them right at home.

In short

A two-step direction asks your child to do two linked actions in order. You can build this at home through everyday play and routines — start with simple, motivating tasks, pair words with gestures at first, then slowly fade the help. Keep it short, joyful and part of daily life rather than a drill.

Fun ways to practise at home

Start where your child already succeeds
  • Begin with one clear instruction your child can already follow, then add a second linked step: "Get the ball and give it to me."
  • Use motivating actions first — snacks, toys, bubbles — so following the direction feels rewarding.

Make it playful

  • Treasure hunts: "Go to the bed and look under the pillow."
  • Helper jobs: "Take the spoon and put it in the bowl."
  • Movement games: "Jump twice and then sit down."
  • Pretend play: "Feed the teddy and cover him with the blanket."

Support, then fade

  • At first, pair your words with a gesture or point, and a short pause between the two steps.
  • As your child succeeds, drop the gestures, then join the steps into one smooth instruction.
  • Keep your language short and clear — say the steps in the order you want them done.

Set up for success

  • Reduce background noise (TV off) and get down to your child's eye level.
  • Celebrate every try, even partial ones — warmth keeps children motivated to listen.
  • Aim for little and often: a few directions woven through the day beats one long session.

When to seek a little extra help

If your child consistently struggles to follow even one-step directions, seems not to hear you, or this feels much harder than for other children their age, it is worth a friendly developmental check. A speech and language therapist can pinpoint whether the challenge is listening, understanding, memory or attention — and give you a tailored plan.

What to watch

Watch whether your child can follow even one-step directions, seems to hear you clearly, and is improving with practice. If two-step directions stay much harder than for same-age peers, or one-step ones are also a struggle, arrange a developmental check.

Try this at home

Weave directions into daily life: at bath time try "Pick up the duck and put it in the tub." Pause between the two steps at first, celebrate every try, and slowly drop the gestures as your child succeeds.

Frequently asked

At what age should my child follow two-step directions?

Many children begin following simple two-step directions between about 2 and 3 years of age, especially when the steps are linked and motivating. Every child is different, so look for steady progress over time rather than a fixed deadline. If you are unsure, a friendly developmental check can reassure you and guide your next steps.

What if my child only does the first step and forgets the second?

This is very common and a normal part of learning. Try shortening your instruction, pausing between the two steps, and adding a gesture or point for the second action. As your child succeeds, gradually fade the support until they can do both steps from your words alone.

Should I keep repeating the direction if my child doesn't respond?

Give your child a few seconds of quiet to process before repeating — many children simply need a little more time. If there is still no response, simplify to one step, show what you mean, and celebrate the success before building back up. Avoid repeating many times quickly, as it can be harder to follow.

How often should we practise?

Little and often works best. A few directions woven through everyday routines — dressing, mealtimes, tidying, play — beats one long session. Keeping it natural and joyful helps your child stay motivated and learn faster.
