Social Initiation

Building Social Initiation with Your Child at Home

Social initiation is your child starting an interaction — looking, reaching, pointing or calling out. Grow it at home by being a warm, irresistible play partner: get face-to-face, pause invitingly during favourite games, put toys in sight but out of reach, and reward every small bid to connect. Keep it short, joyful and pressure-free; if initiation stays very limited across settings, a developmental check helps.

Help Your Child Reach Out First — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every wave hello, every "come play with me" begins with one brave spark — your child reaching out first. That spark can be gently nurtured, right at home.

In short

Social initiation means your child starting an interaction — looking at you, reaching, pointing, calling your name or bringing you a toy — rather than only responding when others lead. You can grow it at home by becoming a warm, irresistible play partner: pause invitingly, follow your child's interests, and reward every small bid to connect. Little and often beats long and forced.

Everyday activities that build social initiation

Make yourself the most fun thing in the room
  • Get face-to-face at your child's level so eye contact is easy and natural.
  • Play games your child loves — tickles, bubbles, peekaboo, chase — then pause and wait. That expectant pause invites them to look, reach or vocalise to ask for "more".
  • Treat any bid — a glance, a sound, a hand on your arm — as a request, and respond warmly straight away.

Create gentle reasons to reach out

  • Put a favourite snack or toy in sight but slightly out of reach, or in a clear jar that needs your help to open. This naturally prompts your child to come to you.
  • Offer choices: hold up two toys and wait for a look, point or word before handing one over.
  • "Forget" a step on purpose — give the cup without juice, or start a familiar song and stop — so your child initiates to keep things going.

Practise with people and turns

  • Roll a ball back and forth, build-and-knock towers, or pass-the-toy — simple turn-taking teaches the rhythm of "my turn, your turn".
  • Name feelings and actions as you play, keeping language short and matched to your child's level.
  • Set up brief, friendly play with a sibling or one peer, staying close to coach gentle openers like "Can I play?"

Keep sessions short, joyful and pressure-free. Celebrate effort, not perfection — connection grows where it feels safe and fun. If initiation stays very limited across people and settings, a developmental check helps you understand why and what to do next.

What to watch

Watch whether your child starts interactions across different people and places — not just responds. If, despite playful invitations, your child rarely looks to share, point, reach or call out across home, family and other settings, book a developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Pick one game your child loves, play it twice, then on the third go pause and wait with a big expectant smile — give them a moment to look, reach or make a sound before you continue.

Frequently asked

What is social initiation in simple words?

It is your child starting an interaction on their own — looking at you to share something, reaching, pointing, bringing a toy, or calling your name — rather than only responding when someone else leads first.

How often should we practise these activities?

Little and often works best. Short bursts woven into everyday play, meals and routines several times a day are far more effective than one long, forced session. Keep it joyful and stop while it is still fun.

My child only responds but never starts — is that a problem?

Many children need extra help learning to initiate. Try pausing during favourite games and placing wanted items in sight but out of reach so your child has a reason to come to you. If initiation stays very limited across people and settings despite this, book a developmental check to understand why.

At what age should my child start initiating interactions?

Babies begin sharing smiles and reaching in the first year, with pointing and calling out emerging in the toddler years. Every child develops at their own pace; a clinician can tell you what is typical for your child's age and stage.
