Routine Expressive

Working on Routine Expressive with your child at home

Routine Expressive work uses everyday routines — meals, bath, dressing, play — as natural chances for your child to communicate. Pause and wait, offer choices, comment instead of quizzing, and warmly accept every word, sound, sign or point. Repeating these moments daily gives rich, low-pressure practice; a developmental check helps if you have any worry.

Some of the richest language practice isn't a special activity at all — it's the bath, the breakfast, the bedtime story you already do every day.

In short

Routine Expressive work means helping your child use their own words and gestures during the everyday routines you already share — meals, dressing, bath, play and bedtime. Because these moments repeat daily, they give your child dozens of natural, low-pressure chances to communicate. The secret is to pause, give your child a reason to speak, and then respond warmly to whatever they offer.

Easy ways to do this at home

Build language into routines you already have
  • Pause and wait. During a familiar step (say, before handing over the cup), stop, look at your child, and count to five in your head. That little gap invites them to fill it with a sound, sign, point or word.
  • Offer a choice. "Apple or banana?" gives your child a reason to express a preference rather than just receive what comes.
  • Comment, don't quiz. Instead of "What's this?", narrate what's happening — "You're pouring the water." Children learn words faster when they hear them, not when they're tested.

Make it worth their while to communicate

  • Keep a favourite item slightly out of reach so your child asks for it.
  • Pause a fun routine (tickle, swing, bubbles) and wait for a look, sound or word for "more".
  • Accept and celebrate every attempt — a point, a sound, a sign or a word all count as expressing.

Expand gently

  • When your child says "car", you say "big car!" or "car go!" — adding one word builds the next step without correcting them.
  • Repeat key words often across the day. Repetition in real contexts is how words stick.

When to get a closer look

These ideas suit most children and there's no harm in trying them. If your child rarely uses words, gestures or sounds to get their needs across, seems frustrated communicating, or you simply have a quiet worry, a friendly developmental check can tell you whether some extra support would help. Trust your instinct — parent concern is one of the most reliable early signals.

What to watch

Watch whether your child uses words, sounds, signs or pointing to ask for things and share interest across the day. Persistent frustration communicating, very few attempts, or your own quiet worry are good reasons to arrange a developmental check rather than wait.

Try this at home

Pick one daily routine — say, snack time — and try the five-second pause before you hand over the food. That short wait is often all it takes to invite a sound, sign or word.

Frequently asked

What does 'Routine Expressive' actually mean?

It means helping your child use their own words, sounds, signs or gestures to communicate during the everyday routines you already share — like meals, dressing, bath and play. Because these moments repeat daily, they give plenty of natural chances to practise expressing needs and ideas.

How long until I see progress?

Every child is different, so there's no fixed timeline. Many parents notice more attempts to communicate within a few weeks of consistent pausing and responding, but real progress is about steady, repeated practice across many ordinary moments rather than a quick result.

Should I correct my child when they use the wrong word?

It's better to gently expand than to correct. If your child says 'car', you can warmly reply 'big car!' This shows the next step without making communicating feel like a test, which keeps them confident and willing to keep trying.

When should I seek professional help?

If your child rarely uses words, sounds, signs or gestures to get their needs across, seems frustrated when communicating, or you simply have a quiet worry, a developmental check is worthwhile. A qualified clinician can tell you whether extra support would help.
