Working on Preposition Exploration with Your Child at Home

Teach prepositions through play and daily routines — hide-and-seek, treasure boxes, body movement and snack-time talk. Model words like in, on and under, let your child copy, and reward effort. Start with the everyday three before adding harder ones.

Words like 'in', 'on', 'under' and 'behind' are tiny, but they unlock big ideas — where things are, where they're going, and how the world fits together.

In short

Prepositions are best learned through play and movement, not flashcards. Use everyday moments — bath time, snack time, tidy-up time — to show your child where things are: in the box, on the table, under the chair. Say the word, do the action, and let your child copy. A little, often, beats a long lesson once a week.

Easy activities to try at home

Start with the everyday three firstin, on, under. Add behind, next to, between and in front of once these are confident.
  • Hide-and-seek with a toy — "The teddy is under the blanket! Now it's on the chair." Pause and let your child find and name where it is.
  • Treasure box — give simple instructions: "Put the spoon in the cup," "Put the block on the box." Cheer every try, even a near-miss.
  • Move your own body — "Let's stand behind the sofa… now in front of it!" Movement helps the meaning stick.
  • Snack-time talk — "Your biscuit is on the plate. Oops, it fell under the table!" Narrate naturally as you go.
  • Picture-book pointing — "Where is the cat? Yes — on the wall!" Books are full of free preposition practice.

Helpful habits: model the word clearly, give your child a moment to respond, and reward effort with warmth rather than correction. Keep it to a few minutes and stop while it's still fun. You can read more about the technique on our Preposition Exploration page.

When to ask for guidance

Most children pick up prepositions gradually between two and four years. If your child is past three and not yet understanding simple location words, or speech in general feels behind playmates, a friendly developmental check is worthwhile — early support is gentle and effective.

What to watch

If your child is past three and still not understanding simple location words like 'in' or 'on', or speech feels behind playmates, arrange a friendly developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Narrate location words as you go through the day — 'shoes on the mat', 'spoon in the bowl', 'cat under the table'. Free practice, no special toys needed.

Frequently asked

Which prepositions should I teach first?

Start with the everyday three — in, on and under — because children meet them naturally at bath time, snack time and play. Once your child is confident, add behind, next to, between and in front of.

How long should each activity last?

Just a few minutes. Short, playful bursts repeated through the day work far better than one long lesson. Always stop while it's still fun for your child.

My child says the word but points to the wrong place — is that a problem?

Not at all — understanding usually grows before perfect use. Keep modelling the action with the word, give gentle examples, and reward effort. If confusion persists past three, a developmental check can help.
