PECS Card Communication

How to Work on PECS Card Communication at Home

PECS teaches your child to communicate by handing you a picture card to request what they want. Start with one motivating item, set up the moment, gently guide a single card-for-item exchange, and reward instantly — then build distance and choice. Keep it short, joyful and woven through the day; a speech therapist can coach the technique and tailor it.

PECS at Home: Helping Your Child Ask and Be Heard — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every time your child hands you a card to ask for something, they have just discovered the power of communication — and that is a moment worth building your whole day around.

In short

PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) teaches your child to communicate by physically handing you a picture card to request what they want. At home you can start simply: pick one motivating item, set up the moment so your child wants it, and gently help them exchange a single card for that item — then celebrate and give it straight away. Keep sessions short, joyful and frequent throughout the day.

How to work on PECS at home

Start with what your child loves
  • Choose one or two highly motivating items first — a favourite snack, a bubble bottle, a particular toy.
  • Make a clear picture card for each (a photo or simple symbol). Keep it palm-sized and laminated if you can.

Set up the moment (Phase 1 — the single exchange)

  • Hold the desired item where your child can see but not reach it.
  • Place the matching card nearby. When your child reaches for the item, gently guide their hand to pick up the card and place it in your open palm.
  • The instant the card touches your hand, name it warmly ("Bubbles!") and give the item immediately. No delay — the exchange is the reward.
  • Quietly fade your physical help over many repetitions until your child hands the card on their own.

Build distance and choice

  • Gradually move the card and yourself a little further away, so your child learns to travel to fetch the card and find you.
  • Once one card is solid, introduce a second so your child learns to choose between two pictures.

Weave it into everyday life

  • Use PECS at snack time, bath time, play time — real moments, not just "sessions".
  • Keep cards within easy reach around the house and in a small folder you carry out.
  • Follow your child's lead and keep it pressure-free; frustration teaches nothing, success teaches everything.

When to ask for guidance

PECS works best when it matches your child's exact stage and is taught with consistent technique across everyone at home. If your child resists the exchange, isn't progressing past a single card, or you're unsure which step comes next, a speech and language therapist can coach you through the phases and tailor the picture vocabulary to your child. PECS can also run alongside speech, gesture and other communication routes — it never replaces talking, it opens the door to it.

What to watch

Watch for your child handing the card independently without your prompt, travelling to fetch it, and choosing between two pictures — these show real progress. If they consistently resist the exchange or stall on one card for weeks, ask a speech therapist to coach the next step.

Try this at home

Keep a favourite-snack card on the fridge at child height. When your child wants the snack, wait warmly for the card before handing it over — turning a daily moment into communication practice.

Frequently asked

At what age can my child start using PECS?

PECS can begin once a child shows they want things but has limited spoken words to ask — often from around 18 months to 2 years, though it suits older children too. There is no strict cut-off; what matters is that your child has clear motivations to communicate about. A speech therapist can confirm whether PECS is the right starting point for your child.

Will using PECS stop my child from learning to talk?

No. Research and clinical experience show picture-based communication does not hold back speech — it often supports it, by reducing frustration and giving your child a successful way to be understood. PECS runs alongside encouraging words, sounds and gestures, never instead of them.

How many cards should I start with?

Begin with just one card for a single, highly motivating item. Master that exchange first — handing the card to receive the item — before adding a second card to teach choice. Adding too many pictures too soon can confuse the early learning, so go slowly and let success guide the pace.

My child throws the card instead of handing it to me. What should I do?

This is common early on. Gently guide their hand so the card is placed into your open palm, and reward only the proper exchange. Keep the moment calm and brief. If it persists, a speech therapist can adjust the set-up and coach the prompting technique with you.
