Modelling Simple Words With Your Child at Home

Modelling simple words means saying clear, short words aloud during everyday play — naming what your child sees, wants and does — without pressure to repeat. Follow their lead, pause to give them time, and gently expand their attempts by adding one word. A few unhurried minutes woven through the day build language faster than any flashcard.

Modelling Simple Words With Your Child at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Your child learns words best from the person they love most — you, speaking simply, slowly, and often, in the rhythm of everyday play.

In short

Modelling simple words means saying clear, short words out loud during daily moments — naming what your child sees, wants and does — without pressure for them to repeat. You become a gentle commentator on their world, so they hear a word many times before they ever try it. A few unhurried minutes, woven through the day, do more than any flashcard.

How to model simple words at home

Keep it short and clear
  • Use single words or short phrases at your child's level — "ball", "more", "go", "up" — rather than long sentences.
  • Say the word slowly and clearly, then pause and wait, giving your child time to take it in.
  • Match the word to what they are looking at or reaching for, so meaning and sound connect.

Make everyday moments your stage

  • Bath time: "water", "splash", "wash", "bubble".
  • Mealtime: "eat", "more", "all done", "banana".
  • Play: "push", "car", "open", "my turn".
  • Getting dressed: "shoe", "on", "socks", "up".

Expand gently, never correct

  • If your child says "car", you say "big car" or "car go" — you stretch the word, you do not say "no, say it properly".
  • Repeat their attempt warmly and add one word. This shows them the next small step.
  • Follow their lead — talk about what they are interested in, not what you think they should say.

Reduce pressure

  • Avoid quizzing ("What's this? Say it!"). Instead, model and pause. Words come faster when there is no test.
  • Celebrate any attempt — a sound, a point, a look — as communication.

The Pinnacle way

Modelling works because children absorb language through warm, repeated exposure tied to meaning. At Pinnacle Blooms Network, our therapists coach families to weave techniques like modelling simple words into daily routines, building on each child's strengths. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — see how the AbilityScore® works. If you have concerns about your child's talking, our speech therapy team can guide a personalised home plan.

What to watch

Watch how your child responds when you model words — do they look, point, or attempt a sound? If by around 16 months your child uses no single words, or seems not to hear or understand familiar words, arrange a developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Pick one daily routine — say, bath time — and choose four short words to repeat every day. Say each word, then pause and wait. Repetition in the same moment helps the word stick.

Frequently asked

How many words should I model at once?

Stick to one short, clear word at a time, matched to what your child is doing or looking at. Saying many words at once can overwhelm a young child; a single repeated word is easier to absorb.

Should I make my child repeat the word back?

No. Pressure to repeat often slows things down. Model the word, pause, and wait warmly. Children try words when they feel ready, after hearing them many times without being tested.

What if my child says the word wrong?

Never correct directly. Instead, repeat their attempt the right way and add one word — if they say 'ba' for ball, you say 'ball... big ball'. This shows the next step gently.

When should I be concerned about my child's talking?

If your child uses no single words by around 16 months, no two-word phrases by 24 months, loses words they once had, or seems not to understand familiar words, arrange a developmental check with a clinician.
