Listening Games to Play With Your Child at Home

Listening is the quiet foundation of talking, reading and following along at school — and the best place to grow it is in the warmth of your own home, through play.

Listening games build your child's ability to notice, sort and respond to the sounds around them — the very skill that underpins understanding language and learning to read. You can practise daily with simple, joyful activities using only your voice and everyday objects, no special kit needed. Keep sessions short, playful and praise-filled, and follow your child's lead.

Listening games you can play at home

For little ones (toddlers and early talkers)

• Sound hunt — pause and whisper, "What's that sound?" when you hear a bird, a doorbell or a car. Name it together.
• Animal noises — make an animal sound and let your child guess; then swap roles.
• Freeze to the drum — bang a pot or clap; they dance, then freeze when the sound stops. This builds listening-and-acting.
• Hide the timer — hide a softly ticking clock or phone alarm and let them find it by sound.

For older children (preschool and up)

• Simon Says — classic listening-and-following fun; add silly actions to keep it laughing.
• Odd one out — say three words, two that rhyme (cat, hat, dog) — which one doesn't belong?
• Story with a signal — read aloud and ask them to clap every time they hear a chosen word, like "dog".
• Repeat-back patterns — clap a rhythm and ask them to copy it, getting gradually longer.

Tips to make it work

• Keep it to 5–10 minutes, and stop while it's still fun.
• Reduce background noise — turn off the TV so the listening target stands out.
• Praise effort, not just the right answer.
• Build it into routines: sounds in the kitchen, on a walk, at bath time.

Listening games are wonderful for every child, but if your little one rarely responds to their name, often seems not to hear you, struggles to follow simple instructions for their age, or you have any worry about their hearing, do arrange a hearing check and a developmental review.
