Listening Games

Listening Games to Play With Your Child at Home

Listening games build the foundation for understanding language and reading. Play short, joyful daily activities — sound hunts, Simon Says, rhyme-spotting and clap-back rhythms — using just your voice and everyday objects. Keep it fun, reduce background noise, and praise effort. If your child rarely responds to their name or struggles to follow age-appropriate instructions, arrange a hearing check and developmental review.

Listening Games to Play With Your Child at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Listening is the quiet foundation of talking, reading and following along at school — and the best place to grow it is in the warmth of your own home, through play.

In short

Listening games build your child's ability to notice, sort and respond to the sounds around them — the very skill that underpins understanding language and learning to read. You can practise daily with simple, joyful activities using only your voice and everyday objects, no special kit needed. Keep sessions short, playful and praise-filled, and follow your child's lead.

Listening games you can play at home

For little ones (toddlers and early talkers)
  • Sound hunt — pause and whisper, "What's that sound?" when you hear a bird, a doorbell or a car. Name it together.
  • Animal noises — make an animal sound and let your child guess; then swap roles.
  • Freeze to the drum — bang a pot or clap; they dance, then freeze when the sound stops. This builds listening-and-acting.
  • Hide the timer — hide a softly ticking clock or phone alarm and let them find it by sound.

For older children (preschool and up)

  • Simon Says — classic listening-and-following fun; add silly actions to keep it laughing.
  • Odd one out — say three words, two that rhyme (cat, hat, dog) — which one doesn't belong?
  • Story with a signal — read aloud and ask them to clap every time they hear a chosen word, like "dog".
  • Repeat-back patterns — clap a rhythm and ask them to copy it, getting gradually longer.

Tips to make it work

  • Keep it to 5–10 minutes, and stop while it's still fun.
  • Reduce background noise — turn off the TV so the listening target stands out.
  • Praise effort, not just the right answer.
  • Build it into routines: sounds in the kitchen, on a walk, at bath time.

When to check in with a professional

Listening games are wonderful for every child, but if your little one rarely responds to their name, often seems not to hear you, struggles to follow simple instructions for their age, or you have any worry about their hearing, do arrange a hearing check and a developmental review. Concerns about understanding language are always worth a conversation — early support is the most hopeful step. Explore more in our speech therapy guidance and the full listening games activity set.

What to watch

If your child rarely responds to their name, often seems not to hear you, can't follow simple age-appropriate instructions, or you have any worry about hearing, arrange a hearing check and developmental review rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Turn one daily routine into a listening game — on your walk, pause and whisper, 'What sound is that?' and name it together. Five joyful minutes beats a long, tiring session.

Frequently asked

What age can I start listening games with my child?

You can begin from babyhood — naming sounds, singing and responding to your baby's coos are all listening play. Games grow with your child: sound-guessing for toddlers, Simon Says and rhyme-spotting for preschoolers.

How long should a listening game last?

Keep it short — about 5 to 10 minutes — and stop while your child is still enjoying it. Several brief, happy moments through the day work far better than one long session.

Do I need special equipment?

No. Your voice, a pot to bang, a few toys and everyday household sounds are all you need. The richest listening play happens in ordinary moments at home.

When should I be concerned about my child's listening?

If your child rarely responds to their name, often seems not to hear you, cannot follow simple instructions appropriate for their age, or you have any worry about their hearing, arrange a hearing check and a developmental review. Early support is always the most hopeful step.
