Jumping and Running

Jumping and Running: Home Activities for Your Child

Build jumping and running at home through short, daily play — bubble pops and lily-pad hops for jumping, stop-and-go and chase games for running. Most children jump by ~2.5 years and run smoothly by 3. Cheer effort, keep sessions short, and seek a friendly check if your child falls often, cannot get both feet off the ground, or avoids active play.

Every wobbly hop and joyful dash is your child's body learning to trust itself — and your living room is a perfect first playground.

In short

Jumping and running are big-muscle (gross motor) skills that grow through play, repetition and fun — not drills. Build them at home with simple games that practise balance, push-off power and landing, a little each day. Most children take off between 2 and 4 years; if your child seems far behind playmates or tires very quickly, a friendly developmental check helps.

Fun ways to practise at home

For jumping
  • Bubble pops — blow bubbles a little above reach so your child jumps up to pop them; this builds the push-off.
  • Lily pads — place cushions or paper circles on the floor and hop from one to the next, two feet together.
  • Jump the river — two ribbons on the floor as a "river" to leap across; widen it slowly as confidence grows.
  • Countdown jumps — "3, 2, 1, JUMP!" off a low, safe step (start ankle-height) with you holding hands.

For running

  • Stop-and-go — run when music plays, freeze when it stops; this builds control and changing speed.
  • Chase and tag — gentle chasing games naturally grow stamina and steering around furniture.
  • Fetch races — "run and bring me the red ball!" turns running into a happy mission.
  • Obstacle dash — weave around cushions then sprint to a finish line for cornering and balance.

Make it work

  • Keep socks off — bare feet grip better and balance improves.
  • Two to three short bursts a day beat one long session.
  • Cheer effort, not perfection — a child who feels safe will try the harder hop.

When a quick check helps

Most toddlers jump with two feet by around 2.5 years and run fairly smoothly by 3. Reach out for a developmental assessment if by 3 your child cannot run without frequent falls, cannot get both feet off the ground to jump, tires far faster than peers, or strongly avoids active play — especially alongside other movement worries. These are reasons to look closer, not to worry.

What to watch

By around 3 years, watch for a child who cannot get both feet off the ground to jump, runs with frequent falls, tires far faster than playmates, or actively avoids running and active play — worth a developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

Try '3-2-1 JUMP!' off a low, safe step with you holding both hands — three short bursts a day, bare feet, cheering effort over perfection.

Frequently asked

At what age should my child be able to jump and run?

Most children jump with two feet together by around 2.5 years and run fairly smoothly by about 3 years. Every child grows at their own pace, so a few months either way is usually normal — what matters is steady progress.

How long should we practise each day?

Two to three short, playful bursts a day work far better than one long session. Five to ten minutes of fun games keeps your child eager and avoids tiring them out.

My child falls a lot when running — should I worry?

Occasional tumbles are normal as children learn. But if by age 3 your child still falls frequently, cannot jump with both feet off the ground, or avoids active play, a friendly developmental check can offer reassurance or early support.

Is it safe to let my toddler jump off furniture?

Start at ankle height from a stable, low step while holding both hands, on a soft, clear floor. Avoid sofas and high surfaces. Build up height only as their landing becomes confident and controlled.
